MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Worker Type:

Regular Job Summary: Performs set up of cardiac telemetry including patient preparation. Monitors patients on telemetry by computer or telephonically. Evaluates cardiac rhythms and notifies the appropriate persons about serious or life-threatening arrhythmias. Creates and types over read reports. Processes and maintains appropriate patient and departmental records. Performs ECGs as needed. Hook up Holter and cardiac event monitors as needed. Maintains and promotes Saint Louis University Hospital service standards.

Responsibilities

Telemetry monitoring and setup including patient preparation (essential functions vary by shift and workflow).

Real-time arrhythmia monitoring and interpretation; provide full disclosures and reports as directed by medical or nursing staff; notify staff of life-threatening or dangerous arrhythmias.

Back-up coverage for ECG Department; perform STAT ECGs as needed when ECG department is closed.

Back-up coverage for Holter Department; hook up Holter and cardiac event monitors as required.

Process reports: prepare over-read reports, post reports the same day, and type over-read reports with high accuracy; document timely.

Perform other Heart Station duties: maintain orderly Heart Station, handle record keeping, enter charges, check supplies and battery voltages, clean equipment between patient use.

Safety/Infection Control: follow universal precautions and maintain a safe, clean environment; report risk management concerns; complete annual requirements; maintain alertness and safe practices.

Service: deliver timely, high-quality, courteous care; respond to patient requests; communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality; demonstrate collaboration and cost-conscious service.

Performance Improvement (PI): participate in PI activities, collect data, discuss results, and support action plans.

Age-Appropriate Care: provide age-appropriate care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients; assess age-specific data and involve family as appropriate; ensure electrode and equipment use is appropriate for quality monitoring and skin care.

Specialized Care: provide care to patients at high risk for injury (restraint care awareness, pain management, abuse assessment and reporting).

Job accountabilities may be reassigned (e.g., completion and typing of over-read reports, performing ECGs, entering billing information).

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

High School or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

0-6 months training/experience in arrhythmia monitoring or equivalent post-high-school vocational/specialized training

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases; exposure to bloodborne pathogens and tuberculosis with protective equipment.

Subject to electrical and radiant energy hazards; contact with patients in varied circumstances; occasional irregular hours.

Occasional prolonged standing/walking; ability to lift, position, push, or transfer patients; lift supplies/equipment; manual dexterity and mobility; occasional reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching, pulling 100+ pounds.
