SUMMARY OF POSITION Under general supervision, performs technical tasks in the operation, maintenance and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification perform technical, manual work. This position is responsible for repairing water leaks, repairing and installing sewer and water mains, and operates and maintains moderate to complex equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct basic supervised water inspection, installation and repair of water mains, water services, water meters, hydrants and valves.
Assist preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up cones, barricades and other traffic control devices.
Assist in preparing tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various job assignments.
Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and tools by cleaning and servicing regularly.
Flush hydrants.
Track water loss.
Identify basic common water parts.
Locally exercise valves and operate valve turner.
Conduct safety inspections and complete check‑off sheets for equipment.
Serve on callout crew, as needed.

Requires perform coordinated movements such as operating a backhoe, hydro‑excavator, dump truck and trailer, front‑end loader, air compressor, gas and electrical pumps and various hand tools.
Ability to work in a team environment, contribute as a member and treat co‑workers, subordinates and customers with respect.
Build professional relationships with internal staff and customers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any work‑related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the below Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute for the specified education and experience requirements.
High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving water construction, maintenance and repair type work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license or obtain one within twelve (12) months of employment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must pass a drug screen and background check.
Must have a Class C Texas driver’s license.
Must obtain the National Incident Merit System (NIMS) certificate IS‑100 and IS‑700 within 6 months of employment.
During storms or natural disasters, staff will be divided into two 12‑hour shifts and may be called in while on vacation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderate objects (20‑50 lb); occasionally heavier objects up to 150 lb. Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Limited exposure to strong odors, smoke, traffic hazards, extreme heat/cold or extreme weather conditions.
