Total Job Title Temporary Ask Us Library Technician

Essential Job Duties This position serves as Ask Us Technician for the Libraries in the Access Services Department. The incumbent provides information and circulation services, including opening and closing procedures, at the Ask Us service points, fast‑paced environments where people go to get help, whether it’s finding a book or signing up for a technology consultation. The incumbent(s) will act as the Service Manager on duty at the service desk, supervising Student Assistants and ensuring library policies and procedures are followed. The incumbent(s) also provide virtual reference through the Ask Us chat service as well as in‑person basic reference services to faculty, students, and staff. The position monitors and troubleshoots patron computing, printing, and staff computing tools, resolves problems for clients, and assists in ensuring the safety and security of people and materials in a high‑volume, high‑technology research library. The incumbent uses independent judgment and navigates ambiguity to enable excellent user experiences and make the hard things easy for the NC State community.

Requirements and Preferences Work Schedule 30 hours/week; Sunday - Thursday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm

Minimum Experience/Education Previous experience working in a library.

Department Required Skills

Significant and relevant experience providing public/customer service or delivering instruction.

Ability to work effectively in a high‑volume, high‑demand environment, and to manage multiple, sometimes competing, priorities.

Familiarity with the services, spaces, technology, and collections provided in a modern library environment.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Excellent communication skills.

Flexibility and willingness to learn new information and take on new tasks.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Bachelor's degree.

Basic technological skills including an awareness of new and academic technologies.

Experience using library technology.

Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

Coursework or experience in research services/reference.

Ability to evaluate, understand, and respond to research questions. Strong commitment to service.
