Charleston County Fleet Operations has an immediate opening for an Automotive Shop Technician. The Technician will maintain and repair the County’s light duty assets, including cars, trucks, and Medium Duty Diesels.

Salary and Benefits

Automotive Technician I – hourly range: $16.68 - $20.97

Automotive Technician II – hourly range: $17.26 - $23.52

Automotive Technician III – hourly range: $18.67 - $25.40

(Salary dependent upon applicant’s experience, skill level, and other job‑specific qualifications.)

Automotive Shop Technicians receive an annual tool allowance.

Position Status Open until filled – application review begins immediately.

Responsibilities

Perform a wide range of repair and maintenance procedures on County vehicles, diagnosing and repairing electrical and electronic components and accessories on all types of equipment.

Execute more difficult service on certain functions, including repairs of heating and air systems, brake and frame maintenance, suspension, tires, and related components.

Document identified problems and diagnoses basic mechanical problems, and repair or replace defective parts.

Discuss vehicle problems with operators to identify issues and explain required work.

Inspect, test, and repair vehicle electrical charging systems such as alternators, regulators, and batteries.

Prioritize repairs to ensure minimal disruption to County work.

Maintain records on maintenance activities.

Provide on‑call backup support for after‑hours repairs on EMS ambulances.

Keep immediate supervisor informed of work progress.

Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and review publications and audiovisual materials to stay current on practices and developments in relevant areas.

Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, supplemented with a year or more of in-depth repair and maintenance or mechanical experience.

Valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Must obtain an ASE certification within the first six (6) months of hire and EPA 609 A/C certification if not already possessed.

Proficiency in diagnostics using multiple types of diagnostic equipment, digital multimeter, and reading wiring diagrams.

Required to be on‑call on a 24/7 basis for repairs to critically needed and emergency equipment as needed.
