Diesel Technician Mechanic
Position: Permanent Full‑Time Experienced Diesel Technician to support our truck fleet at Ryder in North Charleston, SC.
Responsibilities
SBTIII trained within 180 days (SBT220)
Complete all OEM online diagnostic scan tool software courses required by location fleet mix (completed within 365 days)
Complete instructor‑led OEM courses required to support location fleet mix
Perform vehicle maintenance and repair duties including standard maintenance, preventive maintenance, and complex repairs with minimal support
Diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electronic problems using diagnostic computers/software as applicable
Perform remote triage with RCRC and customers to determine best solutions for roadside breakdowns
Perform facility maintenance duties
Interact with customers/drivers to determine nature of complaints once assigned a task
Instruct and advise other technicians on maintenance repair procedures and diagnostics
Coach/mentor other level technicians
Advise shop management and other technicians on shop repairs
Utilize key functions of the Shop Management System and electronic documentation available
Work in accordance with all federal, provincial and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT)
Other support duties as required to support operations, including but not limited to Service Island support
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
Vocational or technical certification, post‑secondary degree or technical certifications (preferred)
Basic tools required
Demonstrated aptitude and applied experience in mechanical repair of automotive gas or diesel engines including routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, brake and tire work)
Diagnostics and repairs including AC, electrical systems
Advanced skilled level repairs, such as some major engine repairs, diesel after‑treatment or automotive fuel injection repairs (required)
Four (4) years or more relevant work experience (preferred)
Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A (preferred)
All other certifications required by location (required)
Additional Requirements
Ability to perform all T3 tasks
Demonstrated advanced analytical and repair skills in vehicle maintenance
Effective interpersonal communication skills
Basic computer skills: PC, Windows, mouse, etc.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Availability to work shift work/weekends and on‑call duty as required
Preferred ASE Certification in PM, Brakes, A/C, electrical, electronics or ASE Master Mechanic
Required to operate shop computers and diagnostic test equipment proficiently
Must have minimum tool requirement
Must road test vehicles as necessary
Demonstrated ability to coach/mentor/influence others
Must be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months after hire
Pass a Ryder drug test, DOT physical, Ryder road test, and Ryder background and motor‑vehicle check (including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last 3 years)
Benefits
Hourly Pay: $34.00 per hour
Certification Bonus: $100 for each new ASE certification, up to $700
Quarterly Bonus: up to $500 every quarter – four times per year
Sign‑On Bonus: $3,000 at 30 days and $3,000 at 90 days
Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday (First Shift Tuesday–Friday 5:00 am–1:00 pm; Saturday 7:00 am–3:30 pm)
Annual merit pay increases every year
