Position Summary The Electrical Apprentice assists other electricians in diagnosing, repairing, installing, testing, and maintaining high, medium, and low voltage electrical equipment and hard‑wired and wireless telecommunication systems. This position supports systems up to 25,000 volts across multiple facilities with varying processes, equipment, and functional requirements. The role operates under direct supervision and is given specific instruction.
Major Responsibilities
Assist electricians with installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of low, medium, and high voltage wiring systems.
Assist in the installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of motors, generators, fans, and other equipment.
Assist in the installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of overhead power distribution systems, power sub‑stations, variable‑frequency drives, and motor control centers.
Assist in the installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of air‑conditioning, refrigerant, chiller, boiler, and lighting systems.
Demonstrate technical aptitude with low, medium, and high voltage circuits.
Apply principles and practices of NEC, NFPA, OSHA, NLSC, including electrical tables, codes, work methods, tools, and operation of high‑voltage and emergency equipment.
Perform preventive and predictive maintenance; maintain tools, parts, equipment, and material inventories for assigned projects.
Perform basic mathematical calculations.
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, plans, and manufacturer specifications.
Operate a man lift, bucket truck, and all associated electrical maintenance equipment.
Learn and apply proper safety procedures and protocols in all work environments.
Maintain a clean and organized work area at all times.
Continuously improve skill levels.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships and public relations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Comprehend, carry out, and administer written and oral instruction.
Possess knowledge of basic electrical principles and concepts.
Normal visual color discrimination.
Strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the electrical trade.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Physical ability to lift, climb, and work in confined spaces.
Willingness to work overtime and for‑callouts as needed.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Able to report to work on time, maintain good attendance record, and work all designated schedules.
Education and Experience
Requires a valid Texas Driver's License.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Must apply for and maintain a valid TDLR apprentice electrician license.
Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment This position requires continuous physical exertion of a strenuous nature. Lifting or pulling/pushing up to 50 pounds daily and up to 100 pounds weekly is typical, using various hand tools and equipment. Work includes exposure to high voltage electricity, inclement weather, wastewater, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined‑space hazards, offensive fumes, excessive noise, heavy traffic, animals, snakes, and poisonous insects. Tasks may involve climbing water tanks and towers or confined‑space entry. Hand and power tools include electrical testing equipment, impact drills, saws, emergency lighting equipment, and safety equipment. Personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, may be required. The employee may operate a company vehicle. Hours other than regular schedule (short notice overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, on‑call, rotating shifts) are required.
