Overview This is a highly customer service oriented position in which employees should strive to exceed customer expectations. Perform at a journeyman level to construct, install, modify, maintain and repair electrical systems, appliances, facilities and related electronic controls and devices in accordance with blueprints, specifications, established practices and pertinent state and local electrical codes. Responsible for installing, checking, maintaining, and modifying the fire alarm systems to assure safety on campus. Responsible for estimating material costs and time required to complete a project and to inspect work.
Responsibilities
Install, maintain and repair electrical appliances and equipment.
Diagnose and correct electrical systems and equipment malfunctions. Test, adjust, sequence, synchronize and align such systems and equipment at AC and DC power supplies, main power control panels, motors, generators, circuit breakers and relay panels.
Determine methods and sequence of operations required to relocate, design, install, test, repair and modify electrical systems and equipment by interpreting blueprints, wiring, and schematic diagrams and following technical verbal and written instructions.
Estimate cost and time requirements of jobs and order needed materials.
Troubleshoot, repair and maintain all types of electrical and electronic control circuits.
Troubleshoot, repair and maintain electrical power distribution equipment, transformers, and switchgear.
Provide technical guidance and direction to support staff personnel.
Maintain, repair and inspect all high voltage lines, transformers, and switches.
Install and monitor electrical test equipment for various electrical components to include transformers, computers, and panels.
Install computer lines to include cost estimates and the purchase of necessary cabling for OIT.
Install, maintain and troubleshoot cable television distribution.
Troubleshoot, repair and maintain elevators.
Assist outside electrical contracting companies on site.
Respond to campus-wide power outages.
Follow NFPA 70 E (arc flash).
Learn new electrical techniques as required to remain up-to-date with current and new technologies.
Live out and make decisions in line with the Clarkson University values in all daily activities while on duty.
Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping.
Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices and/or student workers.
Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet trade specific and University standards.
Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use. Be responsible for care, cleanliness, and maintenance of assigned vehicle and report all vehicle concerns to appropriate supervisor immediately.
Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff and students.
Encourage and Promote Teamwork.
Ability to gain general knowledge of the campus.
Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues.
Qualifications
Education:
Minimal Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications: Associates degree in electrical related field; Journeyman card in electrical; Fire Alarm (NYSET Certified).
Experience:
Minimal: Four (4) years of journeyman equivalent experience as an electrician or in related trade. Documented record of taking courses and/or training to stay current/grow skills in trade. Preferred: Five (5) or more years of journeyman equivalent experience as an electrician.
Essential Skills:
Knowledge of electrical codes; Enthusiasm for the job, a customer service approach and willingness to work in a team environment; Valid NYS driver's license with an acceptable driving record; Proficient mathematical skills; Problem solving and analytical skills; General knowledge of the campus layout and building locations; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Strong organizational skills; Ability to function under stressful conditions and/or high volume with short turnaround; Arc Flash certification within 6 months of employment.
