St. Louis County Department of Transportation and Public Works is looking for several candidates for the Engineering Technician III position. These jobs are responsible for performing technical engineering work, including drafting, plan updates, and construction and material inspection at roadway construction sites.

The typical starting salary range will be $23.10–$27.72 hourly depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. Snow season Department employees that are

required

(as defined by their job description) to work snow will receive a $6 per hour increase when they report for emergency snow removal services.

Essential Functions

Review and interpret construction plans and coordinate construction scheduling.

Inspect materials, work in progress and completed work for compliance with construction specifications, plans and procedures.

Meet with, assess and inspect the work of contractors, consultants and company representatives and resolve issues.

Document and prepare reports on work in progress and non‑compliance notices.

Resolve issues presented by contractors and the general public.

Perform safety checks of work sites and observe work in progress for compliance with established work procedures.

Marginal Functions

Perform a variety of routine field and laboratory testing procedures on construction materials to ensure conformance with specifications.

Perform assigned duties during mandatory snow shift.

Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Equivalent to college level coursework in engineering and mathematics, and three years of experience in roadway construction inspection or a related field.

Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will be required within the first six months of employment.

Selection and Appointment A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job‑related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have three days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
