Equipment Operator Summary:

As an Equipment Operator (Stump Grinder), you will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and transporting heavy machinery and trucks on job sites. This role requires strong equipment-handling skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work as part of a crew to complete tree service and vegetation management projects.

Duties/ Responsibilities

• Drive, load, haul, and operate trucks and heavy equipment (per license status).
• Perform basic machine maintenance and ensure equipment is in safe working order.
• Work in coordination with crew members, taking direction from the Crew Foreman.
• Suggest safe and efficient alternatives to improve productivity.
• Support the crew in meeting daily work schedules and project goals.
• Set up safety barriers, warning signs, and protective measures at job sites.
• Ensure all employees, subcontractors, and visitors follow safety guidelines and sign required documentation (tailboard/JSA).
• Communicate professionally with landowners and customers.
• Operate and service tools such as gasoline/hydraulic equipment, power saws, winches, bucket trucks, chippers, sprayers, and hand tools.
• Spray brush and stumps using herbicides as directed.
• Clean up and dispose of debris.
• Maintain adequate stock of supplies, tools, and safety equipment.
• Report unsafe behavior or conditions to the Crew Foreman immediately.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must have 5+ years of experience
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
• Must have a valid driver's license (CDL preferred).
• Ability to wear and properly use required PPE.
• Experience operating heavy equipment (stump grinders, trucks, or similar machinery) preferred.
• Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices for operating machinery in hazardous environments.
• Ability to read and understand job site plans and communicate effectively with team members.
• Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting minor equipment issues.
• Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required).
• Certification in heavy equipment operation is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 10-50 pounds regularly.
• Ability to grip, push, pull, and handle tools and equipment.
• Frequent climbing on and off trucks, machinery, and uneven terrain.
• Ability to balance and maneuver while handling equipment.
• Tolerance for working outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.).
• Ability to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods due to the hazardous nature of the work.
• Must be able to wear and use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
