Our outpatient surgery department is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to support our clinical team and ensure exceptional patient experiences. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact every day by assisting with pre- and post-operative care, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and providing vital support to both patients and staff.

Responsibilities:

May perform IV insertion, removal and dressing change.

Point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, hospital-acquired condition & patient safety indicator.

May handle simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, all specimen collections and ticket to ride (intra-hospital patient transportation).

Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
n
n
May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
n
n
In addition to the required standard competencies, the Patient Care Technician will achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.

Works with the blood bank and has the authority to draw, type, screen samples, and check samples for blood banding.
n

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with IV insertions. Experienced Phlebotomist or experience with phlebotomy is needed for this role.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-4PM. Will assist in Pre-Admission Testing, Outpatient Surgery, and in Post-Anesthesia Care.

High school diploma or GED.
n

Must also have either a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience, OR c) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR d) completion of a bachelors degree in a health sciences field.

Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
n
n
Successful completion of eRecord training.
n
n
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
n

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

n
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred.
n
n
BLS required within 30 days of hire/transfer.
n
n
ACLS/PALS required within 12 months of hire/transfer.
n
n
Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
n
n
Act 33 with renewal
n
n
Act 34 with renewal
n
n
Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
