Non‑exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible; additional compensation to include annual work boot allowance and shift differential for Saturday work); full‑time; 40 hours per week; varied Monday‑Saturday workdays and hours; full‑benefits.
This skilled position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles assigned to the Frederick County Landfill, Transfer Station, and Recycling Operations, and will also operate trucks and other vehicles as needed. Work is performed during scheduled landfill operating hours, regardless of weather conditions. Direction is received from Foreman(s) through the supervision of the Landfill Operation Supervisor.
NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

Responsibilities
Operate heavy motor equipment such as compactor, dozer, loader, track hoe, articulated dump truck, material handler and grader in order to move and process rubbish at the landfill and maintain the roads within the landfill
Operate a tub or horizontal grinder in the yard waste area or other areas as assigned
Drive a water tank truck on and off‑site for dust control
Drive a pick‑up truck or other vehicle for errands or other landfill needs
Perform daily vehicle maintenance inspection
Complete routine maintenance, repair and adjustments to assigned vehicles, tools and equipment
See that more serious vehicle/equipment repair needs are promptly reported to appropriate person(s)
Complete forms and reports related to vehicle and equipment use and work performed, etc.
Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of work experience operating heavy motor equipment as listed above
Possession of a valid Maryland class B Commercial driver’s license with tank vehicle endorsement and air brake endorsement
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
Knowledge and skills associated with the safe operation of heavy motor equipment, trucks and other equipment under all types of weather conditions
Knowledge of the potential hazards involved in heavy equipment operations, with ability to effectively implement appropriate safety precautions
Working knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in general maintenance of heavy equipment and trucks, and ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs
Ability to recognize mechanical flaws in equipment and vehicle performance in order to arrange prompt repairs and avoid safety hazards
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and the general public
Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, with ability to properly complete forms/reports
Preference May Be Given For
Possession of a valid Maryland class A Commercial driver’s license with tank vehicle endorsement and air brake endorsement (or an equivalent license)

Available on‑call for emergencies and special situations
Available for varied workdays, as scheduled, during usual Landfill operating hours (Monday‑Saturday)
This position is designated as essential personnel, and is required to report to work during inclement weather or other emergency events
This position is subject to random drug testing to include marijuana
