Job Description The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will provide clinical service and conduct clinical trial activities for patients at risk for and living with HIV. Responsibilities include prescription and administration of antiretroviral and other drugs, injections for HIV and STI treatment, administration of vaccinations, treatment adherence counseling, directly observed therapy, support with clinical trial activities, and coordination of care. The APP collaborates with patients, family, treatment team, and research teams to develop coordinated care plans, assists with medication handling and pharmacy coordination, provides counseling on adherence, and serves as a specialty clinical resource for patients, families, research staff, and the interdisciplinary care team. The APP engages with the clinical trials unit, monitors, sponsors, and educated partners on active protocols to facilitate participant referrals.

The APP reviews and enters data in clinical trial registries and databases, works with the research team on the IRB process—including submission, approval, and modifications—and coordinates and conducts clinical trial visits and patient communications.

The APP is credentialed by the medical staff and functions within their scope of practice in accordance with organizational bylaws. They provide evidence‑based care, including assessment, implementation, and evaluation of detailed plans of care with diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, family‑centered care, psychological support, education, and discharge planning. The APP initiates, participates, and collaborates with multidisciplinary staff to provide evidence‑based education, quality improvement, and research, and contributes to institution‑wide initiatives representing advanced practice providers.

The APP provides leadership through division projects and mentorship of others, promoting the role of the advanced practice provider within the organization.

Responsibilities and Functional Accountabilities

Assess, diagnose, and monitor clinical status of each patient utilizing evidence‑based practice and medical knowledge.

Develop appropriate plan of care.

Write patient care orders, prescribe therapy, and provide necessary home care orders as needed.

Identify significant changes in patient status using physical exam, laboratory values, diagnostic tests, and patient/family input.

Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.

Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing.

Participates in and/or leads multidisciplinary patient care.

Serve as a clinical resource for patients, parents, and the interdisciplinary team.

Communicate and elevate clinical or administrative issues appropriately.

Collaborate with nursing, medicine, and other team members to ensure quality patient care.

Serve as a clinical preceptor to NP, CNS, or PA students.

Act as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues.

Provide formal or informal educational presentations to staff on areas of expertise.

Participate and lead quality improvement initiatives in the department.

Qualifications Minimum Education

Master’s Degree Nurse Practitioner. Master’s or Doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.

Physician Assistant. Master’s or Doctoral degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.

Clinical Nurse Specialist. Master’s or Doctoral degree in the clinical specialty area in which they practice from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.

Minimum Work Experience

0 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Strong knowledge of clinical specialty and services.

Demonstrates clinical leadership skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner:

Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice.

CDS in state(s) of clinical practice.

DEA designation.

Physician Assistant:

Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice.

CDS in state(s) of clinical practice.

DEA designation.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Clinical Nurse Specialist:

Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice.

CDS in state(s) of clinical practice if prescribing controlled substances.

DEA designation if prescribing controlled substances.

General Nurse Practitioner:

Active national certification with governing body such as PNCB, ANCC, or AANPCB.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Physician Assistant:

Active national certification with NCCPA.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
