The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is credentialed by the medical staff and functions within their scope of practice in their jurisdictional area in accordance with organizational medical staff bylaws. They are responsible for providing evidence‑based care for the management of patients, including assessment, implementation, and evaluation of a detailed plan of care that incorporates diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The APP demonstrates competency in providing age‑appropriate care to patients as defined by certification and training and provides family‑centered care to meet family needs, including psychological support, education, and discharge planning in conjunction with other related disciplines.
The APP initiates, participates in, and collaborates with divisional and organizational multidisciplinary staff to provide and support evidence‑based education, quality improvement, and research. They participate in professional and organizational activities that contribute to improving patient care, the scientific knowledge base of advanced practice, program operation, and individual professional development. The APP provides leadership within their respective clinical area through participation in division projects and mentorship of others, contributing to department and organization‑wide initiatives and promoting the role of the advanced practice provider.
Qualifications
Minimum Education : Master’s Degree Nurse Practitioner; Master’s or Doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.
Physician Assistant: Master’s or Doctoral degree of Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.
Clinical Nurse Specialist: Master’s or Doctorate degree in the clinical specialty area in which they practice from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.
Minimum Work Experience : Minimum of 0 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.
Required Skills/Knowledge : Strong knowledge of clinical specialty and services; demonstrates clinical leadership skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Required Licenses and Certifications : Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner – licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice, CDS in state(s) of clinical practice, DEA. Physician Assistant – licensure, CDS, DEA. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Clinical Nurse Specialist – licensure; if prescribing controlled substances, CDS and DEA. Nurse Practitioner – active national certification (e.g., PNCB, ANCC, or AANPCB); BLS certification. Physician Assistant – active national certification (NCCPA); BLS certification. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required).
Functional Accountabilities Clinical
Assesses, diagnoses, and monitors clinical status of each patient utilizing evidence‑based practice and medical knowledge.
Develops appropriate plan of care.
Writes patient care orders, prescribes therapy, and provides necessary home care orders as needed.
Identifies significant changes in patient status using physical exam, lab values, diagnostic tests, and patient/family input.
Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.
Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing.
Participates in and/or leads multidisciplinary patient care.
Is a clinical resource for patient, parents, and the interdisciplinary team.
Appropriately communicates and escalates clinical/administrative issues.
Collaborates with nursing, medicine, and other members of the healthcare team to regularly ensure quality patient care.
Administrative
Serves as a clinical preceptor to NP, CNS, or PA students.
Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues.
Provides formal/informal educational presentation to staff on areas of expertise.
Participates and leads quality improvement initiatives in their department.
