Job Description
Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator I or II
Department: Operations
Division: 8
Report to: Road Maintenance Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Location: 4002 N. Mingo Valley Expressway, Tulsa, OK 74116
Note: Candidates may be required to complete a background check, drug screening, and a Physical Abilities Demonstration before starting employment.
Typical Functions
Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment.
Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
Repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
Provide traffic control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags to direct highway traffic.
Apply herbicide to highway rights-of-way to control weeds and other vegetation.
Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items and other obstacles.
Level Descriptor
Level I: Basic level with close supervision, operating and maintaining power equipment and performing unskilled and semi-skilled tasks.
Level II: Career level with skilled work at full performance, operating heavy equipment and performing routine highway maintenance duties.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Level I: Knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery; ability to perform manual labor and operate power equipment; ability to follow instructions.
Level II: Knowledge of operation and servicing of equipment, materials used in highway construction and maintenance, and proper highway traffic control during maintenance operations. Ability to operate heavy equipment, use construction materials, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.
Education and Experience
Level I: None required.
Level II: One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Special Requirements
Valid Oklahoma driver’s license required at time of employment.
Commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A or B may be required; CDL tank vehicle endorsement required for ODOT employees.
Pass drug test prior to appointment.
Willingness to perform job-related travel, work non-regular hours during emergencies, and receive on-call duty messages.
Physical requirements: regular lifting of 80 lbs, occasionally up to 100 lbs; vision, hearing, and manual dexterity abilities as specified.
