Human Resources Technician I

We are seeking a Human Resources Technician I to join our Recruiting and Advancement Unit (RAU). In this role, you will be an essential part of the hiring and selection process for the Colorado Springs Police Department. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while providing critical administrative and technical support to a mission-driven team.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday during typical business hours, with hybrid and flexible work schedules available after the initial training period. Must be able to work occasional weekend days and overtime as necessary.

Job Posting Statement: This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year, and any furloughs subsequently approved.

As an HR Tech I, you will:

  • Provide administrative support to the Recruiting and Advancement Unit.
  • Assist with the civilian and sworn background process to include coordinating fingerprinting, polygraph, psychological testing, and medical appointments; runs NCIC/CCIC queries and credit reports on candidates; prepares background check paperwork and background files.
  • Coordinates and facilitates administrative meetings with both sworn and civilian candidates. Proctors necessary testing.
  • Track candidate progress through the background process and ensure they are progressing through all the steps. Alerts the HR Supervisor to issues in the process such as candidates being unresponsive.
  • Reviews incoming documentation for completeness, refers irregularities to specific investigators and/or the HR Supervisor for review.
  • Reviews/validates transcripts to ensure applicants meet minimum educational requirements.
  • Scan/file documents into background files and software, and maintain and archives files.
  • Responds to routine questions from applicants regarding the background processes.
  • Responds to routine questions and requests from the background investigators and polygraph examiners to include assistance with computer programs.
  • Coordinate and maintain supplies for the Unit.
  • Sort and distribute mail daily.
  • Provide high-level customer service to both internal and external customers via phone, email, and walk-ins regarding background process.
  • Provides administrative support to the Human Resources Supervisor in the way of researching, preparing, and completing special projects.
  • Assist with police recruit applicant testing process, including the physical readiness test (PRT).
  • Annually runs NCIC/CCIC queries on CSPD employees to meet Colorado POST requirements.
  • Coordinates Determination of Suitability backgrounds and records checks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and supporting software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
  • Proficiency in data entry
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Understanding of records release and retention policies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
  • One year of full-time, professional experience in a related field.

Education and Experience Equivalency: One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience that includes extensive interaction with people, Microsoft Office, and HRIS software.
  • Knowledge of NeoGov and eSOPH software.
  • Ability to multi-task, adapt to changing priorities and be extremely flexible.
  • Strong organization and customer service skills.
  • Ability to obtain NCIC/CCIC certification within three months of hire.

Pre-employment Requirements: The job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, fingerprinting, extensive background check, and other pre-employment assessments.
