The

Firefighter Trainee

is the entry‑level class in the Firefighter series, paid at $30.69 per hour for a 40‑hour workweek while attending the San Bernardino County Fire Tower (Academy). Trainees learn and practice fire prevention and suppression, equipment and apparatus care, usage, safety and maintenance, fire terminology, codes, policies, procedures and operations, and state and local laws.

Firefighter Paramedic Trainees

work under training conditions to develop the knowledge and skills required to qualify for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic upon successful completion of a paramedic program and licensing.

Promotion Upon successful completion of the Tower,

will be promoted to

Firefighter – Paramedic Trainee

($74,314.24–$99,968.96 per year based on 56‑hour workweek).

Employees must qualify for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic within 36 months or may be terminated. Incumbents are eligible for promotion upon meeting the minimum qualifications with a satisfactory work performance evaluation.

Conditions of Employment Probationary Period:

Completion of the San Bernardino County Fire Tower (Academy) is required, including the Firefighter I Certification through the California State Fire Service Training and Education System. Upon successful completion, incumbents will be appointed to a Firefighter – Paramedic Trainee position.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform during high‑stress situations, hear within normal audio range without correction, lift and carry equipment and individuals, wear a self‑contained breathing apparatus, have vision correctable to 20/20, pass a color perception test, and work in a variety of environmental conditions.

Other Requirements:

Applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass background investigation, medical examination, polygraph, psychological evaluation, DMV driving record check, military record check, reference checks, and prior employment history review. Failure to meet medical standards may result in withdrawal of employment offer. All employees must adhere to the County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code, which prohibits visible tattoos.

Health and Physical Condition:

Must meet the safety health and physical condition standards deemed necessary for performance of duties established by the San Bernardino County Fire District.

Dress:

Candidates, applicants, and employees are expected to dress appropriately for all testing, interview, background, and on‑the‑job phases; at minimum business‑casual unless instructed otherwise.

Physical Assessment All candidates must successfully complete a job‑related physical assessment prior to receiving a final job offer. The assessment includes a beep (multi‑stage shuttle run) test, pull‑ups, push‑ups, and sit‑ups.

Beep Test:

Continuous run between two markers, 20 meters apart, in time with audio beeps. The pace increases each level until the candidate cannot maintain speed. Measures aerobic endurance and stamina.

Pull‑Ups:

Minimum number within a time limit.

Push‑Ups:

Minimum number within a time limit.

Sit‑Ups:

Minimum number within a time limit.

FCTC Statewide Eligibility List Minimum Requirements

Be 18 years of age or older.

Possess a valid driver’s license.

Have a high school diploma or GED.

Possess a valid Cal‑JAC CPAT Card (CPAT results uploaded automatically by FCTC).

Receive a passing score on the FCTC Written Test – written test score expires 12 months from date taken. SBCFPD accepts FCTC scores of 80% or higher.

License:

A valid California EMT License or Nationally Registered EMT Certification is required at the time of application and must be attached to your application. The license must be current and in good standing.

Current CPR/BLS certification (copy must be attached to your application).
