Summary This position is a working leader assigned responsibility for building and utility maintenance work, providing daily direction to at least three (3) workers, and performing trades work on a substantially full-time basis.

Duties The incumbent leads a crew on construction and maintenance of hiking trails, docks, campgrounds, and surrounding grounds, including:

Hauling heavy timbers, constructing boardwalks, installing trail drainage components, removing stumps and rocks, installing trail and park signs, constructing trail bridges, felling hazard trees.

Dock and marina maintenance and construction: masonry, floating and crib docks, timber cribs and decks, rub rails, cleat installation, and bin‑wall repairs.

Custodial operations: cleaning and stocking front and back‑country restroom facilities, emptying refill & recycling containers, upkeep of buildings, shops, and workspaces.

Reporting to supervisor, assisting planning, leading technical aspects of grounds, trail, and campground projects.

Maintaining effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, along with computer, word processing, and park service software proficiency.

Open Announcement This is an open continuous announcement with multiple cut‑off dates. Initial cut off: Monday, December 29, 2025. Referral certificates are issued when current certificates are exhausted or additional vacancies need to be filled.

Location Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, northern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula of Wisconsin, 75 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. The park contains 21 islands and 13 miles of Lake Superior shoreline over 290,000 acres.

Requirements – Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship required.

Subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Selective Service registration required for males.

Direct deposit participation required.

Drug testing prior to appointment; random testing may occur.

Motorboat Operator Certification Course or equivalent after duty date.

Valid driver’s license required; submission of driver’s record and certified driving records from all states.

Uniform required; allowance provided.

Minimum age requirement: 18 years or 16 years with high school completion or equivalent.

Government housing may be available.

Qualifications

Interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).

Lead or supervise.

Use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair.

Knowledge of materials.

Technical practices.

Use of measuring instruments.

Screenout Applicants must demonstrate ability to lead or supervise maintenance work equivalent to WG‑8, with experience in at least two of the following trades: electrical, masonry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, wastewater treatment operating, water treatment plant operating, or engineering equipment operation.

Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations is credited.

Education No substitution of education for experience for WG positions.

Additional Information Announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of issue date. Employment may terminate at any time due to funding fluctuations, project needs, performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands Work from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb; lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions Inside and outside dirty, spray, fumes; extreme weather; protective equipment; risk of broken bones, shock, burns, cuts, bruises.
