Field Service Technician Overview As a Field Service Technician, you will assist with on-site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face-to-face contact with our customers and be expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high-speed networks. This position exceeds customer expectations by performing extraordinary customer service, identifying customer needs, and providing them with communications solutions. Products and services include Local Service, Central Office Services, Structured Cabling, MAC (Moves, Adds, and Changes), Voice Mail, Audio and/or Video Conferencing, and Non-regulated CPE.
Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the Augusta, MI warehouse located at 212 S Webster St – Augusta, MI 49012.
This position can be hired at either Field Service Technician, Field Service Technician‑Network, or Field Service Technician‑Network Specialist levels, depending on skills and qualifications.
Responsibilities
Assist with and perform on-site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and/or other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
Identify location of defective cabling using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and/or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
Operate pole climbing and construction equipment, and locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
Maintain an orderly log of all locate requests in our exchange area and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
Provide troubleshooting support techniques, respond to "trouble" dispatches, and support enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross-connects, line groups, network elements).
Deliver excellent customer service while proactively educating and selling TDS products and services to customers.
Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Valid driver’s license.
Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs and customer obligations.
Other Qualifications
Must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, including background checks per customer.
Must be available for on-call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel and overtime may be required.
Successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
Maintain DOT requirements related to operating vehicles with a combined GVRW > 10,000 lbs.
A+ certification and computer networking experience.
Gain understanding of telecommunications products and services (inside wiring, internet, bonding, grounding, data transmission, fiber optics, video/CATV/DBS installation, etc.).
Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications such as databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel.
Ability to work independently with little supervision and make decisions.
Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, and effective verbal and written communication for internal and external customers.
Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment The position requires sitting, standing, writing, and operating a computer keyboard, standard office equipment, and telephone. The role involves frequent communication with customers, moving about, reaching items, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. The job may require working outdoors or in mechanical/equipment rooms and under extreme weather conditions. Physical demands as described are representative of those required to successfully perform essential functions.
