Job Description The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida is seeking an Open Rank Faculty to provide Hospice and Palliative Care services in an inpatient patient care setting. Appointment as a USF faculty member carries attending staff privileges at Tampa General Hospital and affiliated hospitals. TGH is a level‑1 trauma center that serves as a tertiary care facility for south central and west Florida. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires a minimum of five years of continuing and productive service as an Assistant Professor, or the equivalent. Appointment at the rank of Full Professor requires a minimum of five years of continuing and productive service as an Associate Professor or the equivalent.

Responsibilities

Clinical – The primary objective of palliative medicine is to help patients and families understand the status and likely progression of their illness and to help their physicians understand what is most important to the patient. This may involve conversations around prognosis, advanced directives, expertly managing pain and symptom distress, and facilitating transition to community services. Inpatient call and coverage for the hospice and palliative care service line. Developing ongoing treatment and disease management plans. Prescribing medicine and coordinating referrals as necessary. Conducting early detection screenings. Maintaining accurate patient records and charts. Communicating effectively with patients, staff, physicians, and administration.

Teaching – Participate in didactic teaching and mentoring of medical and/or graduate students, residents, and/or post‑doctoral fellows.

Administrative – Protected time for administration, research, and/or education is consistent with holding specific leadership roles and fulfilling said responsibilities. Should the leadership role change, the protected time may be removed and offset by increased clinical FTE assignments.

Reporting – Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher‑level administrator of a state university.

Academic – Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.

Advising – Responsible for academic advising and related activities.

Representation – May represent the university, college/school, or department.

Qualifications Minimum

– Medical degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. For Associate/Full Professor, normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in revered and other professional journals and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.

Preferred Must hold or be eligible for a full, unrestricted Florida Medical License or foreign equivalent. To perform this position, the candidate will need to obtain and maintain a full unrestricted FL Medical License, maintain credentials in the USF Health faculty practice plan, and be a medical staff member in good standing at the hospitals assigned to perform clinical duties. The candidate will participate in teaching of residents, fellows, and medical students in clinical medicine. Must be board certified in Palliative Care Medicine.
