Summary The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care guided by the American Nurses Association scope of practice. The nurse collaborates with patients, families, peers, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in delivering healthcare services. The nurse assesses patients’ needs, develops and implements care plans, follows hospital policies, and demonstrates leadership and professional accountability.

Responsibilities

Complete patient assessment and reassessment as clinically indicated.

Document detailed information incorporating the plan of care, interventions, and outcomes reflecting the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional status.

Ensure appropriate documentation based on the level of care the patient is receiving, including transfer/discharge documentation as indicated.

Follow the five Rights of Medication Administration and verbalize to patients/family the medication they are receiving. Assess the patient prior to administering medications, noting allergies, parameters, potential side effects, effectiveness, and intervene as needed. Reassess and document response according to hospital policy.

Coordinate and supervise the delivery of nursing care, including delegation of tasks and maintaining accountability for delegated care.

Actively work to promote a culture of safety by assessing patients for potential safety risks, adhering to policies, initiating interventions, conducting bedside shift reports and rounds with peers, documenting the nursing process responsibly, and ensuring proper patient hand‑off during breaks.

Assess learning needs of patient/family/significant other. Plan and provide appropriate instruction using applicable teaching methods. Assess and document patient/family response to teaching.

Provide patient‑centered care for specific patient populations as necessary, embracing cultural diversity, respecting dignity, and maintaining open lines of communication.

Meet accreditation, regulatory, and compliance responsibilities related to the position.

Promote a culture of learning and growth by seeking experiences and independent learning activities, and providing mentorship.

Perform other duties as assigned within the state nursing scope of practice.

Education & Licensure

Associate’s degree in Nursing.

Current and unobstructed New York State Registered Nurse license (NY Hospitals).

Current and unobstructed Connecticut Registered Nurse license (CT Hospitals).

New graduates awaiting licensure at the discretion of the Chief Nursing Officer (CT only).

Preferred American Nurses Association endorsed certifications or Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses certification.

Required/Preferred Training

BLS – All Nursing Care Areas (required upon hire).

ACLS – ED, ICU, CCU, SDU PCU, PACU, Cath Lab, GI, LDRP, IR, Float Pool (specific to individuals’ competency and location floated).

Cardiology focused units: required by end of orientation period.

PALS – ED, PACU, Pediatric Areas (either PALS or ENPC required by end of orientation period).

NRP – MCH, NICU, LDRP, DR (required by end of orientation period).

EFM – LDRP (within 1 year of hire).

TNCC – ED (required Danbury, Norwalk). ICU, PACU (DH preferred), etc. (within 1 year of hire).

ENPC – ED RN. Either PALS or ENPC (within 1 year of hire).

TCAR – ICU (VBMC preferred), ICU/PACU (NH) (within 1 year of hire).

Other trainings: CPI, S.T.A.B.L.E, Chemotherapy Certification, and additional unit‑specific certifications (timeframes vary).

Working Conditions

Manual: significant manual skills/motor coordination & finger dexterity.

Occupational: some occupational risk.

Physical Effort: Medium to Heavy effort, may exert up to 35 lbs. force.

Physical Environment: some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
