Responsibilities Under the direction of the Supervising and/or Chief Boiler Inspector, the incumbent supervises Boiler Inspectors in an assigned area in conducting regulatory inspection of high/low pressure boilers and directs staff training. Enforces Industrial Code Rules and national standards regulating the construction, installation, inspection and maintenance of steam and hot water, high/low pressure boilers of commercial and residential types ensuring that vessels are constructed and registered in accordance with New York State Labor Law requirements. The Senior Boiler Inspector will perform the more complex inspections and investigations.

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Subsequent 55 B/C Qualifications:

A subsequent 55b/c appointment may be considered if you have one year of permanent or contingent‑permanent service as a Boiler Inspector and have a current Civil Service 55b/c approval letter.

Reassignment Qualifications:

Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55b/c service as a Senior Boiler Inspector; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current eligible list for this location, if one exists.

52.7 Non‑Competitive Promotion (NCP) Qualifications:

To be eligible for NCP, candidates must be in the Department of Labor promotion field and have one year or more of permanent, contingent‑permanent or 55 b/c service as a Boiler Inspector. If 3 or fewer qualified Department of Labor Boiler Inspectors respond to this posting, Civil Service may approve the permanent appointment of one of the qualified Boiler Inspectors without further examination.

Provisional Qualifications:

NYS Department of Labor Employees Only – candidates must have one year of permanent, contingent permanent, or 55b/c service as a Boiler Inspector. The appointed candidate would have to take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the examination to be appointed permanently.

Note: Non‑competitive refers to not competing in an examination; the appointment will be competitive.
