Position Title Financial Aid Specialist (Student Financial Services) (Part‑time) – Norco College, part‑time, 19 hours per week.
Basic Function Provides specialized support to students applying for financial aid. Works with students and internal financial aid staff to facilitate access to education‑related grants, loans, waivers, and scholarships. Accepts, reviews, researches, and processes financial aid requests, verifies the accuracy and validity of applications and documents, and assists in the grant and loan disbursement process.
Supervisor Receives general supervision from the assigned area supervisor. May provide lead direction to temporary staff and/or student workers.
Responsibilities
Accepts, processes, researches, and completes all financial aid requests, including grants and loans, adhering to federal, state, and institutional regulations; verifies accuracy and validity of documents; resolves conflicts and packages applications for final review.
Advise and inform a diverse population of students and families on financial assistance programs, eligibility, and application procedures; respond to phone, email, and written requests promptly and accurately.
Serve as initial point of contact for students with special circumstances; conduct interviews to evaluate best approach for continuing with financial aid requests.
Provide counseling to students on integrating financial concerns with personal or academic issues confidentially.
Review California College Promise Grant applications and tuition waivers, ensure eligibility, maintain spreadsheets, update policies and procedures, and verify veteran eligibility.
Process and award special program grants, scholarships, and waivers; maintain records and perform grant reconciliation and reporting.
Educate students on accurate disbursement of funds and create informational literature and communications; archive documents in a scanning database.
Assist students with financial aid preferences, including account creation and communication with disbursement providers.
Collaborate with student services and academic departments; assist with workshops and training on financial aid regulations; attend conferences, workshops, and training seminars.
Participate in district‑provided in‑service training programs.
Perform other related duties as assigned; duties are not limited to the list above but must be similar or related.
Qualifications
Education : Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience supporting a financial aid program in an educational institution; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Experience : Knowledge of multiple sources of financial aid, intake guidelines, eligibility determination principles, application processes, interview techniques, mathematical principles, office procedures, registration processes, cultural diversity, document processing, report generation, grant and loan funding, federal, state, and local laws and policies, recordkeeping, and materials development.
Ability : Interpret and apply changing policies; work with a diverse population; perform accurate mathematical computations; evaluate documentation; enter and retrieve data efficiently; maintain thorough, organized, accurate processing; provide technical support to funding processes; answer questions discreetly; collaborate with departments; exercise independent judgment; use computer systems and software; communicate effectively; maintain working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds; provide high‑level customer service.
