Position Responsibilities

Specialty Surgical Services

Prepare the OR suite appropriately to receive a new admission. Greet the patient upon arrival and initiate hemodynamic monitoring.

Evaluate, assess and document patient's surgical status. Report abnormal findings to physician and document pre/post-op counts.

Assist anesthesia in maintaining intake and output, check availability of blood products, and verify with anesthesia before administering. Document blood administration and ensure accuracy.

Demonstrate ability to handle difficult situations and conflict in a timely manner.

Apply appropriate safety measures regarding potential radiation exposure.

Monitor, evaluate and intervene appropriately with patients receiving conscious sedation.

Use safety positioning devices, providing ongoing observation, intervention and documentation per hospital policy.

Maintain thorough knowledge of operation, care and handling of O.R. equipment. Perform new procedures, skills and routines in specialty areas.

Perform initial vital signs and admission history, including patient and family introduction. Assess chief complaint and notify physician within 15 minutes of arrival to procedure area.

Document a complete nursing admission assessment, including physiological and psychological factors to develop a plan of care within eight hours of admission.

Perform and document an accurate systems assessment at the beginning of each procedure.

Respond to diagnostic data and initiate appropriate action or intervention.

Assess patient education needs on admission.

Assess psychosocial needs specific to patient's age, growth and development.

Initiate plan of care within eight hours of admission.

Prioritize patient care based on documented needs and complete assigned duties within the shift.

Verbalize understanding of patient diagnosis and plan of care.

Safely initiate and document nursing interventions in emergency situations.

Perform 24‑hour chart check at the beginning of each procedure.

Prepare intravenous solutions with aseptic technique.

Administer, observe and document intravenous therapy according to hospital policy.

Administer medications within 30 minutes of scheduled time. Observe and document effectiveness; recognize and report adverse reactions immediately.

Provide individualized instructions for each procedure to patient or significant other regarding the plan of care.

Demonstrate safe use of unit‑specific equipment.

Ensure each patient's general hygiene needs are met.

Perform pre‑operative and post‑operative care and instruction for each assigned surgical patient during shift.

Adhere to standard precautions, including hand hygiene, at all times.

Document specific patient valuables on designated form when received and arrange for appropriate storage.

Conduct dressing changes with aseptic technique.

Collect and label specimens per policy when ordered by physician.

Perform bedside glucose monitoring according to policy.

Report all abnormal findings immediately to physician.

Initiate wound and skin protocol upon identification of risk.

Perform ostomy care, including irrigation, appliance usage and teaching reinforcement.

Insert intermittent or indwelling urinary catheter using aseptic technique.

Administer oxygen therapy per physician order.

Transfer patients in/out of the unit efficiently, obtaining complete and correct transfer orders, completing and documenting the transfer summary, and ensuring referral forms accompany intrafacility transfers.

Use restraints safely and correctly.

Document or report patient responses or outcomes from nursing interventions, treatments or procedures, interactions, and education.

Evaluate and document patient progress towards established goals and objectives.

Update or revise patient care problem list and individualized patient standards based on responses and progress.

Obtain 100% mandatory hospital and unit‑specific in‑services annually before evaluation date.

Plan, present and document unit in‑service as required by level.

Document competency in clinical skills annually.

Attend staff meetings as required.

Utilize established lines of communication for problem resolution and interpersonal conflict.

Present at least 2 in‑services and 2 patient conferences annually.

Attend 75% staff meetings.

Serve as a preceptor/clinical resource.

Function as a Charge Nurse and assist in applying financial management principles—for staffing, scheduling, decreasing LOS, triaging, supply management.

Chair or co‑chair unit‑based PI committee meetings.

Participate in clinical competency compliance of staff.

Qualifications

License/Registration/Certification

O.R. RNs: Current RN Licensure in FL, BLS required, CNOR preferred.

Ambulatory RNs: Current RN Licensure in FL, BLS required, CNOR preferred.

PACU RNs: Current RN Licensure in FL, BLS, ACLS, and PALS required; CPAN and/or CAPA preferred. (Pre‑testing RNs do not need ACLS or PALS.)
