Girls Ment To Be is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls ages 7–17 through mentorship, academic support, leadership development, and community engagement. As our organization continues to grow, we are strengthening our financial systems to ensure transparency, compliance, and long‑term sustainability.
Girls Ment To Be is seeking a
Volunteer Finance & Accounting Advisor
to support our
Board Treasurer and CEO
with financial oversight, accounting guidance, and nonprofit compliance.
This is a
non‑board, advisory role
ideal for an accounting or finance professional who wants to give back, provide pro‑bono expertise, or gain hands‑on nonprofit experience—without a heavy time commitment.
Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Oversight
Review monthly income and expense reports
Support accurate categorization of donations, grants, and program expenses
Assist with bookkeeping system setup or review (e.g., QuickBooks, Wave)
Flag discrepancies or potential compliance concerns
Taxes & Compliance
Support preparation and review of IRS Form 990 / 990‑EZ
Help ensure state and federal nonprofit compliance
Coordinate with an external CPA, if applicable
Budgeting & Financial Planning
Assist with annual operating and program budgets
Support budgeting for events, workshops, and fundraising initiatives
Help forecast cash flow and long‑term sustainability
Board & Leadership Support
Prepare simple financial summaries for board meetings
Serve as a resource to the Board Treasurer for financial questions
Advise on internal controls and best practices (advisory only)
Qualifications
Background in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or financial management
CPA, accountant, finance professional, or experienced bookkeeper preferred
Familiarity with nonprofit finance (or willingness to learn)
Strong attention to detail and high integrity
Comfortable collaborating with board leadership and executive leadership
Time Commitment
Approximately
2–4 hours per month
Flexible, remote schedule
Optional additional time during tax season or audits
What This Role Is Not
Does
not
involve signing checks or handling funds
Does
not
replace the Board Treasurer
Is
strictly advisory and supportive
