Summary The District is searching for a qualified applicant for its Maintenance Worker Collections Job Series. We will fill the position at the appropriate job series level based on the selected candidate's qualifications. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Operations and direct supervision of the Collection System Supervisor, the incumbent maintains, cleans, and performs minor repairs on the sewer collection system.
Maintenance Worker Collections I This is the entry-level classification in the job series. Incumbents work under close supervision as they learn and perform a limited range of tasks. Familiarization with the District's facilities, policies and procedures is required at this level.
Maintenance Worker Collections II This is the skilled-level classification in the job series. Incumbents perform the full range of skilled duties. Assignments may encompass a variety of tasks, and may seldom require detailed instructions. Must exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines and show initiative.
Maintenance Worker Collections III This is the journey-level classification in the job series. Incumbents perform the more complex assignments and specialized tasks. Incumbents must have the ability to train and lead staff.
Senior Maintenance Worker Collections This is the advanced journey-level, working-lead class in the job series. Incumbents provide first-line direction, technical assistance and training to the assigned crew. Duties are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
Assist with operation and maintenance of line-cleaning equipment and related sewer-cleaning equipment.
Assist with cleaning of sewer lines, manholes, wet wells; provide minor field maintenance of equipment, sewer lines, and manholes; perform wash-downs and vacuuming of foreign debris from work sites.
Operate a variety of small equipment, including generators, gas detectors, portable pumps, ventilating fans, and common hand and power tools.
Set traffic control, follow proper safety procedures, read and interpret District sectional maps.
Utilize computerized maintenance and inspection management software to log asset condition assessments and maintenance activities.
Assist with customer complaints regarding sewer odors, blockages, potential line breaks, and manhole problems; provide recommendations to the Collection System Supervisor to address problems.
Properly handle and apply chemicals used within the collections system.
Follow standard operating procedures as assigned by Supervisor.
Work varying shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and respond to call backs; perform standby duties as assigned within 18 months.
Respond to emergencies during and after work hours consistent with the Incident Command System (ICS), Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS), and National Incident Management Systems (NIMS).
Perform other duties as assigned.

Valid California Class B driver’s license with tank and air brake endorsements or obtain within 18 months of job placement; maintain a safe driving record.
Possession of California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Grade D1 Certificate and California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Collection System Maintenance Grade 1 Certificate, or ability to obtain within 18 months.
Ability to take direction and follow through on one’s own to complete assigned duties.
Physical Qualifications Position requires the ability to work in a field maintenance environment with the ability to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 80 pounds. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb during field maintenance and repair work, and be able to work in an environment that could produce exposure to dust, dirt, and significant temperature changes. Must be able to stand and walk for extended time periods. Must have hearing, vision, and eye‑hand coordination sufficient to operate equipment and maintain good awareness during maintenance and repair jobs.
Medical Benefits Coverage is effective the first day of the month following a month of employment.
Health Insurance Health insurance is offered to employees and their dependents through Anthem Blue Cross of California. Employees have the option of choosing HMO or PPO coverage.
Dental Insurance The District pays 100% of the premium for the employee and his/her eligible dependent(s) who are enrolled in dental insurance offered through Anthem Blue Cross.
Vision Insurance The District pays 100% of the premium for employee and eligible dependents enrolled in vision insurance offered through Vision Service Plan (VSP).
Life Insurance The District pays 100% of the premium for life insurance provided by The Standard with a benefit of two times the employee’s annual salary up to a maximum of $300,000.
Section 125 Plan The District offers a Section 125 Plan, allowing employees to defer payroll taxes on medical insurance premiums and providing a Flexible Spending Account for qualified medical and/or dependent care expenses collected through payroll deductions.
