Position Purpose The Patient Support Technician functions as a collaborative member of the healthcare team in partnership with and under supervision of the Registered Nurse, utilizing principles of Relationship‑Based Care. The role provides direct patient care to a specific group of patients and coordinates activities that relate to the flow of unit processes. Actively supports the activities of the unit‑based shared governance council, promoting organizational commitment and excellence in patient care experience.
Essential Functions
Demonstrate principles of Relationship‑Based Care to cultivate and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and the interdisciplinary care team.
Provide patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, cultural preferences, and expressed needs, ensuring comfort and pain relief.
Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN supervision: venipuncture, 12‑lead ECG, basic blood glucose collection, respiratory care (cough, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry, oxygen setup, hand‑held nebulizer), dressing changes, vital sign collection, and recognition of life‑threatening conditions with initial responses.
Perform activities of daily living (ADL) appropriate to the patient's condition under RN supervision.
Initiate and maintain patient medical records.
Manage communication for the unit, including placing and receiving calls from physicians, other departments, and visitors.
Maintain an accurate patient roster/census and available ready beds.
Assist with patient education under RN direction.
Integrate principles of the Personal.Connected.Journey and demonstrate Trinity Health Guiding Behaviors to provide excellent care to self, patients, and team members.
Provide basic nutritional support to patients, such as bed set‑up, assistance with feeding, and documentation of intake and calorie count.
Seek personal accountability to maintain skills and competence through feedback and self‑appraisal.
Assist with admission processes: collecting assessment data, applying necessary equipment, labeling patient belongings, informing families of unit routines.
Provide individualized care consistent with the plan of care under RN supervision.
Actively engage in unit‑based and other committees that promote patient and workplace safety, optimal outcomes, and satisfaction.
Report changes in patient condition to RN in a timely manner.
Demonstrate proper body mechanics and professional conduct.
Perform other duties as assigned; duties may vary by unit, patient type, and complexity of treatment.
Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program, code of ethics, and other policies.
Support customer‑service expectations and revenue management practices as outlined by unit or departmental standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferably at least one: 6 months direct patient care experience within the past 5 years; completion of one Medical/Surgical clinical rotation; completion of a “Patient Care Technician” program with an externship; previous Health Unit Coordinator/Unit Secretary experience.
Graduation from an accredited high school, GED program, or equivalent.
Education (Preferred)
Certification program requiring a Medical/Surgical rotation.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Equivalent work experience as defined in Section D.
Licensure / Certification
EMT: current licensure in the State of Michigan.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Maintain appropriate skill level via required hospital and unit‑based education.
Typical day includes sitting 25 %, standing 25 %, walking 50 % of the day.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
Weekends and holidays may be worked; assignment to other units or shifts may be required.
Activities include squatting, crawling, kneeling, crouching, balancing, bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, pushing/pulling.
Hand use for simple grasping and fine manipulation.
Possible lifting and carrying of patients or equipment up to 51 pounds; items from the floor not to exceed 35 pounds.
