Purpose The Pet Stylist’s primary purpose is to perform expert-level professional grooming services—bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, gland cleaning—prioritizing the safety, comfort, and well‑being of each pet and delivering high customer satisfaction to pet parents. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Grooming Salon Leader, Solutions Manager or Store General Manager.
Essential Job Functions
Under moderate to limited supervision, perform professional grooming services per pet parent instructions, adhering to breed standards and company policies.
Operate and maintain grooming instruments, including clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
Prioritize pet wellbeing, monitor for discomfort, illness or injury, and report concerns promptly.
Assess individual pet needs considering coat type, skin conditions, temperament.
Inter‑act professionally with pet parents, address inquiries, provide recommendations and resolve questions.
Educate pet parents on grooming maintenance and at‑home care to promote pet wellbeing.
Maintain a clean and safe grooming area and salon; disinfect, sanitize tools and perform cleaning duties daily and weekly per Petco hygiene policy.
Apply knowledge of grooming policies, standards and guidelines to ensure safety, quality and consistency across the salon.
May train, support and supervise entry‑level trainees in absence of a Grooming Salon Leader.
Education / Experience
Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco, or previous experience as a professional groomer and/or completion of a technical grooming training program.
High‑school diploma or GED preferred, though not required.
Independent judgement and problem‑solving in routine to moderately complex grooming tasks.
Results‑driven with commitment to productivity, performance and ownership of role.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards.
Passionate about animals and desire to continue a career in pet grooming.
Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues and behaviors.
High proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for pet parent and team interactions.
Ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
Availability to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required by the grooming schedule.
Work Environment The majority of duties are conducted indoors in the grooming salon. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lbs as necessary) and standing for extended periods. Exposure to heights with a ladder or vacuum may occur. The environment can be noisy and wet. Direct contact with pet parents and dogs is a significant portion of the role.
Salary Range Hourly: $15.00 – $22.50
