General Description Under general supervision, the Land Surveying-Engineering Technician performs entry to intermediate level office and field technical duties in support of transportation engineering, surveying, and construction units. The technician assists in planning, design, computer-aided drafting (CAD), geographic information systems (GIS), land surveying, record management, grant coordination, and field operations.
Responsibilities
Conduct surveys using total stations, robotic total stations, data collectors, GPS, drones, and leveling rods.
Record instrument readings, calculate distances, angles, elevations, grades, and compute final survey plats.
Maintain measurement notes, monuments, and prepare survey reports based on field data and existing records.
Drive stakes, rods, and set final lines and monuments; operate field equipment and maintain equipment cleanliness.
Assist surveyors, attorneys, and property owners in locating old surveys, records, and study the area being surveyed.
Manage crew and direct surveying functions; plan and schedule survey activities and collaborate with internal departments and external partners.
Prepare and review design drawings, layouts, contract plans, and related specifications for right-of-way plans and legal descriptions.
Participate in projects, attend meetings, and meet all safety and OSHA requirements.
Support GIS mapping, data entry, scan surveying documents, and maintain tax maps and plats using computer software, scanner, and plotter.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED plus post‑secondary education in engineering technology, CAD technology, GIS technology, construction technology, surveying technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Valid Ohio state driver’s license with insurability on the county vehicle insurance policy.
Strong knowledge of surveying technology, CAD, GIS, construction technology, and record management.
Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills.
Licensure or Certification Requirements Valid Ohio state driver’s license and insurability for county vehicle insurance. Previous experience or certification in land surveying or related fields is preferred.
Equipment Operated Land‑surveying field equipment, modern office equipment, mobile devices, GPS, total stations, robotic total stations, drones, UAS, jackhammers, construction engineering testing equipment, traffic asset and stormwater assessment equipment, environmental monitoring equipment, and personal protective equipment.
