Job Duties

Perform highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of multiple makes and models of heavy‑duty trucks, road construction and maintenance equipment, medium and lightweight vehicles, and other motorized equipment.

Fabricate and repair equipment and parts using welders, welding materials, and methods to adapt incompatible parts, replace unavailable parts, secure attachments, and repair damage.

Calibrate various systems on heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment that distribute various materials as they pertain to road and weather conditions, allowing operators to drive safely and efficiently.

Inspect new equipment to ensure it meets specifications and set up new equipment to be road‑ready.

Evaluate equipment to identify adjustments needed to accommodate auxiliary attachments, equipment, and operating systems; install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic system components to restore equipment to a safe and operational state.

Maintain hydraulic systems; install and monitor electrical systems; repair steering systems; repair suspension, brake, drive train, and fuel systems; and repair or overhaul diesel and/or gasoline engines.

Perform varied snow‑removal tasks, preventative maintenance, and general upkeep of assigned equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment, or post‑high‑school vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics with instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and automotive/diesel mechanical maintenance and repair practices, equipment, and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Automotive Diesel Mechanics, with experience in the repair of trucks or heavy equipment.

Experience in welding and fabrication.

Basic computer experience.

Possess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire through our in‑house CDL training program; costs to obtain the permit will be covered by the department.

Additional Requirements

A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with O restriction and tanker endorsement is required within 90 days of hire; costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department.

Must be able to be placed on‑call and respond during non‑scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends, for emergencies and special events.

Work performed in adverse weather conditions and during traffic management activities, including snow removal, sanding, and de‑icing.

Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Must be able to report to work for snow and other highway emergencies within 45 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed in an “on‑call” status.
