Assistant MEP Project Manager at Mortenson.
Summary Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Assistant MEP Project Manager who can interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever‑changing environment. The role requires flexibility, resourcefulness, proactivity, and efficiency, combined with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The candidate should anticipate problems, critical issues, and opportunities as they arise, creatively problem‑solve, and bring together viable solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and meticulous attention to detail are essential. The Assistant MEP Project Manager will partner with the project manager from bid preparation through final client acceptance for the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) scopes of work and will also lead, coach, and mentor project team members.
Responsibilities
Perform cost control and financial management
Work with pre‑construction on project estimate and schedule
Coordinate scopes of work
Review and compile pay applications, change requests, and other project financial documentation
Partner with the Project Manager or Construction Executive
Draft client proposals
Contract administration and management
Award subcontracts
Provide direction to the project team for safe and timely project completion
Act as liaison for project engineers, mentor, and coach others
Provide job assignments and manage career development
Direct responsibilities and guide Field Engineer(s) and Project Engineer(s)
Manage subcontractors and suppliers for the project
Oversee budget for and make recommendations for subcontractors and trade partners
Lead project buyout with subcontractors and trade partners
Facilitate and lead meetings between subcontractors related to project coordination
Lead and direct the 3‑D coordination process to resolve all conflicts prior to installation
Direct and manage the commissioning process on the project inclusive of the start‑up plan, COT, commissioning schedule, and functional testing
Lead all activities required in the project closeout inclusive of operations and maintenance manuals, model turnover and training
Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: perform on‑site Project Manager duties on small scope projects; implement a quality plan that ensures the customer’s specified performance criteria in design and construction
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Architectural, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
Minimum five years of related previous experience, preferably with a mechanical or electrical contractor
Proven ability to assist with all responsibilities for complex projects
Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
Basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, project, and pertinent web application skills
Positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
Current driver’s license

Base pay range for this role is $102,000 MIN – $137,700 MAX. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
