Overview
Correctional Officer I - TEMPORARY AIDE - Buena Vista Correctional Facility. The role maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities and supports the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Work Location
Buena Vista, Colorado Responsibilities
Work directly with inmates in a locked facility Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required) Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles Monitor visiting areas Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts Cross check and maintain movement logs Conduct searches for contraband (may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches) Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards Inspect inmate mail and property Respond to emergencies such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED Conditions of employment and background investigation requirements as specified by CDOC All offers contingent on successful health screening Successfully complete CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics assessments Possess the physical ability to perform defensive tactics and related duties Willing to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays; ability to report to work during inclement weather Willing and able to use physical force as trained, including firearms where applicable Willing to work in a locked facility with variable conditions and travel to transport inmates as needed TB screening required for new employees Required Competencies
Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability Sound judgment and decision-making Interpersonal and teamwork skills; customer service oriented English reading and writing proficiency; effective verbal communication Observation skills to identify hazards and security breaches Ability to monitor inmate locations and maintain accurate counts Ability to conduct searches and operate security devices Knowledge of CDOC policies, ADA, PREA and related regulations Basic computer skills and documentation ability Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and follow safety protocols Willingness to work in diverse environments and communicate with inmate families and the public Ability to manage stressful situations and remain alert Preferred Qualifications
