Position Summary Under the direction of the Bureau Chief of Fire Prevention, the Fire Inspector is responsible for skilled fire prevention work as part of the City of Crystal Lake’s Community Risk Reduction program, including inspection and reinspection of all inspectable occupancies, new construction inspections, plan reviews, fire investigations, and public fire prevention education.

Essential Job Functions

Conduct inspections and re‑inspections of commercial, industrial, educational, and institutional buildings, and other inspectable occupancies, checking for compliance with municipal and state codes related to life safety, fire hazards, and fire protection equipment; secure compliance or institute legal action if necessary.

Assist in conducting investigations of fires, as directed by the appropriate authority.

Investigate complaints of hazardous conditions, determine the presence of hazards, and initiate corrective action as required.

Review plans for new building construction, additions, and alterations for fire‑related concerns, participate in field inspections of construction in progress, and develop survey and site plans for strategic fire‑risk responses.

Maintain the Fire Prevention Bureau’s files and reports; prepare statistical reports as needed.

Schedule inspections and coordinate with other departments.

Participate in assigned training programs and maintain certifications through continuing education.

Give lectures and demonstrations on fire‑prevention subjects and distribute educational material.

Assist in developing and implementing public education and volunteer programs for the Fire Rescue Department.

Provide support to the Bureau Chief for coordinating special events and implementing public information strategies to promote a positive image of the Fire Rescue Department and the City.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by at least two years of coursework in fire prevention and related subjects, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Certification as an NFPA Fire Inspector I or Office of the State Fire Marshal of Illinois Fire Prevention Officer I, ICC Inspector I, NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner, or ICC Certified Fire Sprinkler and Fire Alarms Plans Examiner (or ability to obtain within 18 months), Fire Investigator certification, and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator (or ability to obtain within 18 months), plus a valid driver’s license.

Considerable knowledge of fire‑prevention technology and techniques, fire inspection methods, municipal, state, and federal fire‑prevention regulations, construction methods and fire‑hazard identification, fire‑suppression and detection systems, hazardous materials, water supply systems, and building systems including heating, ventilation, electrical, and cooking.

Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications and recognize deviations during construction.

Additional qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong technical skills in Microsoft Office Suite, outstanding organizational and time‑management abilities, detail orientation, multitasking capability in a fast‑paced environment, critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills, and high‑level integrity in handling confidential and sensitive information.

Supplemental Information Starting salary range: $35.04 to $40.00 per hour DOQ with a competitive benefit package, including health, dental, and vision insurance.

Hours are generally 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
