Band 5 Operating Department Practitioner/Anaesthetic Nurses - 67.5 hours

Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to join our dynamic Theatre Team at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle; the city at the heart of the Lake District.

We are currently recruiting Band 5 Operating Department Practitioners and Anaesthetic Nurses to work in our Theatre Department which provides perioperative care for both adults and children in the following specialities:

Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Urology, Upper GI and Colorectal, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Vascular, Head and Neck and Ophthalmology.

We provide exemplary planned one to one care for patients who are undertaking a general or regional anaesthetic. This care varies from patients following the day surgery pathway to patients following enhanced care pathways for major surgery.

The post holder will also cover out of department duties which include attending trauma calls in A&E, assisting in anaesthetising patients undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and out of hospital transfers.

This post is not only suitable for experienced Operating Department Practitioners/Anaesthetic Nurses, but it is an exciting start to any newly qualified ODP/RNs career. A preceptorship period is offered to all successful applicants, but our Trust has a dedicated one‑year preceptorship programme offering ten study days during this period to enhance any newly qualified RN/ODPs knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job The main role of this post is, as part of a team provide excellent intra‑operative care following the NCIC values and policies for all patients undergoing surgery within the Theatre Department.

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care in partnership with the patient and the multidisciplinary team.

The Operating Department Practitioner/Anaesthetic Nurse will as part of the team work closely with the Anaesthetist to deliver the necessary anaesthetic for the planned surgery. This also includes covering out of department duties which include attending trauma calls in A&E, assisting in anaesthetising patients undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and out of hospital transfers.

The Trust will provide a twelve month preceptorship period for all newly registered healthcare professionals.

Healthcare Professionals returning to practice, moving into new roles or changing clinical environments, may access an agreed preceptorship period.

Person Specification Qualifications

Registered General Nurse/ODP, with active NMC/HCPC Registration

Commitment to undertake mentorship module on completion of preceptorship qualification.

Diploma/degree in Nursing

Skills and Aptitudes

Able to deal with a continually changing workload.

Ability to communicate with staff at all levels.

Ability to communicate with MDT.

Ability to work as member of a team.

Extended clinical skills e.g. venepuncture

Interpreting baseline observations.

Basic IT skills.

Able to use initiative appropriately.

Knowledge and Experience

Able to manage a Ward/Department area for a period of a shift.
