About This Position Over 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2024, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact over $44 billion annually.
The Aviation Department has a vacancy for an HVAC Building Equipment Operator II position. This role is responsible for the oversight of the preventative maintenance program, operation of the building automation systems for occupied space comfort, and more difficult technical tasks involved in operating, maintaining, overhauling, and repairing a variety of air conditioning, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment in one or more City of Phoenix buildings.
The work requires the ability to lead and give technical direction to employees, prioritize work assignments, and operate equipment according to manuals, directions, specifications or warning signals, and to interpret performance charts and control panels which reflect the efficiency of each piece of equipment in the system. Responsibilities include working in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.
Ideal Candidate
Ability to prioritize work assignments.
Ability to operate equipment according to manuals, directions, specifications, or warning signals.
Ability to use a wide variety of tools and equipment such as general mechanic tools, volt‑ohm meter (VOM), and metal fabricating tools.
Ability to work in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.
Salary
Pay Range: $31.82 - $42.64 per hour.
Hiring Range: $31.82 - $40.61 per hour.
Pay Range Explanation
Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems.
Supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
Must possess a Universal EPA and CFC certifications (Universal Chlorofluorocarbon) required at time of application.
Working conditions:
Ability to walk for prolonged periods, moving heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet), climbing ladders or steps to reach objects, working at heights greater than 10 feet, and working with 480 volts.
Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

Experience with troubleshooting HVAC controls.
Experience using MS Office applications (e.g., Word and Excel).
Experience with interpreting and working from prints, sketches, diagrams etc.
Experience with other mechanical equipment, such as automatic doors, jetways, air compressors, pumps, etc.
