The Inova Respiratory Therapy Residency Program focuses on advanced patient management for all ages and levels of care. Through hands‑on clinical training, lectures and simulation‑based education, you will enhance your patient assessment and management skills. As a resident, you will rotate and train at Inova hospitals in varying care settings. Tailor your experience by selecting one of two learning tracks: Adult residency track Adult and Pediatric General and Intermediate Care Units Medical‑Surgical ICU Cardiovascular ICU Trauma‑Surgical ICU Adult and Pediatric Pediatric residency track Adult and Pediatric General and Intermediate Care Units Pediatric Emergency Department (including Level 1 Trauma) Pediatric ICU Pediatric Cardiovascular ICU Small Baby Unit (SBU) Respiratory Therapy Fellowship Program: Upon completion of the residency program, therapists who demonstrate exceptional clinical and professional skills will be invited to apply for an advanced 3‑month fellowship to further their skills and specialization in respiratory care. Job Responsibilities: The Respiratory Therapist Applicant administers basic respiratory care therapeutics and diagnostic services with skill and proficiency. Consistently performs basic clinical assessments (i.e. pulse rate, respiratory rate, breath sounds, cough/sputum, chest wall/movement, perceived work of breathing, etc.) of the cardiopulmonary system with a moderate degree of accuracy. Administers basic respiratory therapeutic interventions (i.e. gas/humidity therapy, bronchial hygiene, CPT, lung inflation, airway management, manual ventilation, resuscitation and medicated aerosol) with moderate proficiency and occasional supervision. Performs weaning mechanics as ordered with high proficiency in more than 90 percent of ventilator patients cared for. Reviews the need for continuing ventilator support (i.e. spontaneous breathing trail, weaning) in more than 90 percent of the ventilator patients cared for on a daily basis. Collects specimens and performs basic diagnostic testing (e.g. EKG, sputum collection, bedside spirometry) with moderate proficiency and occasional supervision. Requirements for consideration: As per VA Law - A person who has graduated from an accredited respiratory therapy education program may practice with the title "RT-Applicant" until they have received a failing score on any examination required by the Board for licensure or six months from the date of graduation, whichever occurs sooner; Any person practicing pursuant to this subsection as shall be identified with the title "Respiratory Therapist, License Applicant" or "RT-Applicant" on any identification issued by an employer and in conjunction with any 18 signatures in the course of his practice.
