SUMMARY The Associate Director, Market Development is a senior field-based commercial role responsible for driving meaningful Key Opinion Leader (KOL) engagement, identifying and executing regional market development opportunities, and serving as the bridge between headquarters and field execution.

This position directly influences regional commercial performance by executing initiatives that drive awareness, education, and product adoption consistent with Ionis’ brand and market access strategies. The Associate Director, Market Development collaborates cross-functionally with Sales, Market Access, Marketing, and Medical Affairs to ensure alignment of regional execution with national strategy. This is a customer-facing role with measurable influence on sales performance and access objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy and Market Execution

Develop and execute regional market development plans that enhance product awareness, market readiness, and customer engagement.

Partner with field leadership to translate national brand strategy into regional commercial objectives and measurable outcomes.

Identify, cultivate, and maintain strategic relationships with KOLs, healthcare providers, and key accounts to support brand advocacy and patient access.

Serve as commercial liaison across departments, ensuring consistent and compliant communication with customers and internal partners.

Deliver impactful, field-based education on disease state, product data, and Ionis’ value proposition.

Commercial Impact and Sales Collaboration

Collaborate with Regional Sales Directors, District Managers, and Market Access teams to achieve defined regional commercial performance goals, aligned with revenue and product adoption targets.

Analyze regional market trends, performance data, and customer insights to identify growth opportunities and adjust tactics as needed.

Support account-level planning and coordination to ensure optimized resource deployment and goal achievement.

Participate in the establishment and execution of Key Sales Objectives (KSOs) and other measurable performance metrics.

Insight Generation and Program Execution

Collect, synthesize, and communicate actionable market insights that inform strategic decision-making and marketing strategy.

Identify and develop high-quality peer-to-peer educational programs that align with compliance and brand priorities.

Evaluate the impact of field initiatives, adjusting strategies to enhance effectiveness and ROI.

Compliance and Governance

Execute all activities in full compliance with Ionis’ Code of Ethics, Field Incentive Compensation Program policies, SOPs, and all applicable laws and regulations.

Maintain all required certifications, training and compliance attestations as a condition of incentive eligibility.

Collaborate with Compliance and Field Leadership to ensure all speaker programs, events, and engagements are executed according to Ionis standards.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree required with 12+ years of cross-functional commercial experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, ideally in rare disease or specialty therapeutics; or an advanced degree (MBA or related field) and 8+ years.

Demonstrated success influencing regional commercial performance, achieving or exceeding revenue or access goals.

Proven expertise in KOL engagement, market development and cross-functional collaboration.

Strong business acumen with the ability to translate data and insights into strategic field action plans.

Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a compliance-driven environment with sound judgment and ethical integrity.

Proficiency in planning, prioritizing and managing multiple initiatives in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
