Position Overview
Part‑time Associate Instructor position in the English department at West Valley College, Saratoga, CA.
Responsibilities
Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in‑class or online/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, and consultation with students.
Maintain accurate class records and submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due.
Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices and maintain office hours each week at 0.5 hours per week per section.
Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies, and programs of the District and college.
Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course and refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
Work cooperatively within the college community and foster an environment that protects academic freedom and a positive working environment free from harassment, prejudice, and bias.
Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual.
Qualifications
Education – Possess one of the following:
Master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; or
Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; or
Valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in English; or
Equivalency of the above.
Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Selection Process
Applications will be screened by appropriate department representatives as needed. Qualified applicants who best meet the needs of the division will be contacted for an interview.
Travel expenses for the interview are the responsibility of the candidate.
Applications will remain in the online system for one year. Each year, part‑time pools will be refreshed and applicants will be notified of the opportunity to re‑submit an application.
