JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT
Under the direction of the Recreation Programmer, Dance instructor will independently lead, instruct and motivate participants in dance classes. They are responsible for coaching students through safe, progressive, and effective foundations of dance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches dance classes based on set class schedules to a variety of skill levels collectively; provides adequate warm-up, stretches, and cool down time.
Instructs participants on proper dance methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates dances, and teaches appropriate dance progressions.
Prepares appropriate routines, equipment, music, handouts, etc. for class.
Assists participants, answers questions, and maintains a positive dance experience for members and class participants.
Builds relationships with participants and has a positive presence with instructors and members.
Keeps supervisor informed of customer and facility needs.
Ensures that safety standards are met, and that department and facility policies are adhered to.
Effective communication skills with the public, supervisors, and co-workers.
Completes proper documentation, including class attendance sheets and timesheets.
Ensure proper upkeep, appearance, and function of class space and equipment.
The above duties and responsibilities include those tasks, physical and mental requirements, visual requirements, unique physical surroundings and mental/cognitive abilities required to perform the essential elements of the position.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Special License(s)/Certifications: Accredited dance instructor certification preferred. CPR/AED certification preferred -and/or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Experience – with 1-2 years dance instructor experience.
Skills – Strong interpersonal communications skills for interacting with participants. Knowledge of teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, equipment when appropriate.
Mental Requirements – Ability to make sound decisions and use good judgement; ability to prepare appropriate plans for classes. Communicate effectively with participants.
Supervisory Responsibility – This position will not supervise other staff, but will work in cooperation with Recreation Programmer.
