Student Life and Leadership exist to provide a robust campus community to support student engagement, leadership development, and extracurricular activities creating a sense of belonging.
Reporting to the Dean of Retention and Student Success, the Campus Wellness & Fitness Center Manager is responsible for the daily operations of campus wellness initiatives and the fitness center at the Historic Triangle Campus. The position provides support (purchasing supplies, equipment inventory, etc.) to the Director of Athletics for fitness facilities at the Hampton Campus. This role is central to promoting holistic student well‑being by developing and implementing wellness programs, events, assisting with the oversight of sensory and lactation spaces, and resources that encourage healthy living and personal development across a diverse, multigenerational college community.
*This is a part‑time, restricted grant‑funded position. Continuation of employment is based on funding availability. *Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Special Assignments: May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Key Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (KSAs)
Comprehensive understanding of health standards, safety protocols, and wellness principles.
Familiarity with health‑related regulations and compliance requirements.
Strong grasp of wellness and health promotion strategies, including current industry trends and best practices.
Knowledge of data analysis and program evaluation methods.
Skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners.
High level of organizational and planning skills.
Creativity in designing and implementing innovative wellness programs.
Abilities
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
Physically capable of lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, and reaching; able to demonstrate exercises and lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to move throughout a multi‑floor facility, including frequent stair and ramp use.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to proactively address challenges.
Required Qualifications
Experience managing staff and overseeing operations.
Experience working with the public in stressful situations.
Event planning, evaluation, and analysis.
Experience in filing and office software applications.
First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
Experience in public speaking, training facilitation, and wellness education.
Considerable relevant work experience.
Considerable experience in fitness/wellness program management.
Budgeting experience.
Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Able to work at all campus locations.
Additional Considerations
Experience working in a higher education environment.
Certified personal trainer or group fitness instructor.
Professional certifications in wellness, health promotion, or related disciplines, such as NASM.
