Nocturnist Physician (MD/DO)
Must be legally licensed to practice medicine in North Dakota and/or Minnesota, depending on the location of the practice to which you are assigned
Position Summary The Nocturnist Physician provides overnight inpatient medical care to hospitalized patients. This role focuses on admissions, cross-coverage, and acute clinical management during nighttime hours, ensuring continuity of care, patient safety, and timely response to emergent medical needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide overnight inpatient medical coverage for hospitalized patients
Evaluate and admit patients from the emergency department and direct admissions
Manage acute medical issues and changes in patient condition
Provide cross-coverage for existing inpatients
Respond to rapid response events, codes, and medical emergencies as required
Coordinate care with nursing staff, consultants, and ancillary services
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care teams
Ensure clear and thorough handoffs to daytime hospitalist teams
Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and utilization initiatives
Supervise and collaborate with advanced practice providers or residents as applicable
Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
Completion of an accredited residency in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
Board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
DEA registration or eligibility
Skills and Competencies
Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in acute care settings
Ability to work independently during overnight hours
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Ability to manage high-acuity patients efficiently
Commitment to patient safety and evidence-based care
Work Environment
Acute care hospital inpatient setting
Overnight and shift-based scheduling, including weekends and holidays
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and move throughout hospital units
Manual dexterity for bedside assessments and procedures as required
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient evaluation
Must maintain state certification and/or licensure.
