About the Role P/T Sailing Coach (Seasonal/Academic Year) Academic Year Position

The Sailing Coach at San Domenico School leads our student-athletes in overseeing daily practices, developing technical seamanship and racing strategy, and mentoring athletes in sportsmanship and teamwork. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe, rigorous, and supportive atmosphere where students can excel on the water while upholding the school’s values of integrity and community.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Sailing Coach manages practices and regattas, coordinates with local yacht clubs or sailing centers, and mentors students in teamwork and leadership while also working closely with student-athletes, parents, and fellow coaching staff. The coach ensures that the sailing program remains a standout component of the San Domenico athletic experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and supervise on-water practice sessions, focusing on boat handling, rigging, points of sail, and racing tactics.

Coach the team during regional regattas, ensuring students are prepared for competitive environments and represent the school with excellent sportsmanship.

Prioritize water safety at all times, including monitoring weather conditions, ensuring proper life jacket use, and maintaining a safety launch during practices.

Oversee the maintenance and care of the sailing fleet (e.g., FJs) and equipment, including trailers, sails, and rigging.

Coordinate logistics for travel to and from venues, including the transportation of boats and equipment to regatta sites.

Maintain clear and consistent communication with student-athletes and parents regarding practice schedules, regatta sign-ups, and safety protocols.

Collaborate with the Athletic Department to manage the program budget, equipment inventory, and vendor relationships with local sailing centers.

Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback to help sailors of all levels improve their skills and confidence.

Ensure all school and league safety and emergency protocols are strictly followed.

Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes by following school protocols and maintaining a respectful team culture.

Maintain and manage all team equipment and uniforms.

Promote a culture of "Panther Pride" by encouraging high standards of sportsmanship and academic balance for all players.

Attend required athletic department meetings, school open house events, and professional development sessions.

Qualifications Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

3+ years of experience coaching sailing, ideally at the high school or collegiate level.

Deep knowledge of USTA rules and competitive match strategies.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate young athletes.

Ability to work flexible afternoon hours, including evenings and weekends for regattas.

Valid California driver’s license required (with a clean driving record).

Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the season starts).

Desired Skills:

Experience working in an independent school environment.

Strong organizational skills for managing rosters and regatta reporting.

A commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for athletes of all backgrounds.

Compensation This is a limited, part-time, non-exempt hourly position, paid at $25.00 per hour. The total base compensation is anticipated to be up to $5,000.00 for the season. This is considered a limited part-time position and is ineligible for School-sponsored benefits.
