Job Title: Financial Administrative Representative
Job Location: 1225 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA (90017)
Schedule: Night 5x8-Hour (17:00 - 01:30)
Duration: 13 Weeks
Note: Orientation week may differ from the posted shift time.
Position Summary
The ER Financial Representative is responsible for ensuring reimbursement from patients or responsible parties, while assisting patients in understanding their insurance coverage and financial obligations. This includes:
* Determining eligibility, benefits, and utilization requirements.
* Securing patient accounts through POS collections and financial arrangements.
* Assisting patients with programs such as Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (HPE), and Uncompensated Care.
* Supporting patients and families with clear communication about financial responsibilities after a medical screening exam.
* Maintaining compliance with PIH Health policies, EMTALA regulations, and HIPAA requirements.
All patients are seen regardless of insurance or ability to pay.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Registration & Financial Counseling
* Complete accurate patient registration, demographics, and insurance verification.
* Collect payments, establish financial arrangements, and secure accounts before discharge.
* Educate patients about insurance, financial liability, and payment options.
* Assist patients with eligibility programs (Medi-Cal, HPE, Covered California, Uncompensated Care).
Collections & Revenue Generation
* Meet/exceed monthly collection goals through upfront collections.
* Request payment from insured/self-pay patients in compliance with EMTALA.
* Secure financial arrangements using Payment Estimator & Payment Navigator systems.
* Accurately handle, reconcile, and secure all collected funds.
Compliance & Accuracy
* Maintain 95%+ registration accuracy.
* Ensure all consents, HIPAA forms, COA, and required documents are scanned.
* Follow PIH Health and regulatory guidelines for eligibility and financial documentation.
* Uphold confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and hospital privacy rules.
Customer Service & Teamwork
* Provide compassionate, respectful, and professional service to patients, families, and staff.
* Use effective communication and translation services as needed.
* Support emergency department workflow during high census or critical needs.
* Serve as a resource/trainer for new staff and collaborate with case managers and eligibility vendors.
Productivity & Performance
* Complete 20-30+ registrations per 8-hour shift, including scanning and collections.
* Ensure timely registration (within 30 minutes of medical screening).
* Proactively follow up on discharged accounts within 1-2 days if liability not secured.
* Participate in performance improvement, continuing education, and training.
Required Skills & Qualifications
* 2+ years of experience in front office, medical billing, or hospital registration/admitting.
* 2+ years of insurance verification or hospital/medical billing experience.
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Strong knowledge of Medi-Cal, HPE, Medicare, Covered California, COBRA, VVC, and Uncompensated Care programs.
* Medical terminology knowledge.
* Proficient computer skills (MS Office); typing speed 45+ WPM.
* Strong math skills to calculate estimates, copays, and payment plans.
* Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
* EMTALA knowledge and compliance.
* Ability to multi-task in a high-pressure emergency environment.
* Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification within 3 months of hire.
* LA City Fire Card within 2 weeks of employment (PIHGS only).
Preferred:
* Continuing education in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
* Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages).
