Base pay range $91,503.00/yr - $118,957.00/yr

Summary The Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) position is located at the W.G. "Bill" Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center; Salisbury - NC. Employees in this Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) assignment oversee the clinical nutrition section of NFS providing administrative and technical supervision over staff at the GS11 level and below and may supervise advanced practice and/or program coordinator dietitian(s).

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA)

Exception for GS-07 and GS-09 Only: Dietitians who do not possess the RDN/RD credential

Non-credentialed Dietitians who otherwise meet the basic qualification requirements and have fulfilled the requirements below - but do not possess the RDN credential - may be given a full-time temporary appointment not to exceed one year under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405(c)(2)

May only be appointed at the GS-07 or GS-09 level and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain their RDN credential

Non-credentialed Dietitians must have fulfilled each of the following: Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent

Foreign Education: To be creditable - college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND and meet ACEND's International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam

~AND~ Completed an ACEND accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN

A list of ACEND accredited programs are located on the ACEND website or at ACEND Accredited Programs Directory

Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements

Grade Determinations: Supervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) - GS-12

Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level

Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of accrediting requirements in clinical nutrition to assess staff compliance and implement performance improvements

(b) Skill as a nutrition expert to provide technical guidance - direction and staff development

(c) Skill in Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines to develop - implement and coordinate best practices

(d) Skill in establishing goals and objectives to coordinate activities - evaluate accomplishments and solve problems

(e) Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e. - plan - organize - delegate - direct - control and review activities and performance)

(f) Ability to analyze data in order to recommend allocation of resources

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)

Physical Requirements: The position requires intermittent walking and standing

Carrying normal amounts of written/reference materials is routinely done

Duties

Duties listed are not inclusive of all duties associated with this position: The Supervisory Dietitian is responsible for the execution of clinical nutrition programming within the facility - community-based clinics - and the local community

They provide administrative management and direction of the Clinical Nutrition Section and ensures proper coordination between the delivery of clinical nutrition services and the overall delivery of health care

Supervisory Dietitians ensure evidence-based guidelines are integrated into clinical practice and collaborate closely with the Supervisory Dietitian (Food operations) to enhance the Veteran's dining experience and to support the strategic goals of the food operations section

Serves as a professional and technical advisor to staff and other health care professionals

Represents the Clinical Nutrition Section on projects - committees and/or workgroups within the department and facility

Assumes full responsibility for planning - directing - and assessing the work and competence of subordinate staff

Collaborates with other managers in the medical center to negotiate and/or make decisions on NFS related matters affecting clinical operations

Provides Clinical Nutrition Section specific leadership and exercises a full range of supervisory and personnel management authorities and responsibilities

Develops procedures and guidelines for clinical operations and monitors compliance with regulatory standards and policies and procedures

Participates in performance improvement efforts within Clinical Nutrition section - acting on quality improvement data and plans

Leads the action planning process to attain goals and resolve deficiencies

Identifies and prioritizes problems - sets long and short-term goals - identifies action plans for the clinical section and nutrition program Builds and implements contingency plans within the section - ensuring continuity of clinical operations in all internal and external emergency situations

Executes the training plan for the clinical section and ensures staff remain up to date on advances and changes in medical nutrition therapy

Orients and trains employees related to clinical nutrition and appropriate policies and procedures

Assists with new employee onboarding

Ensures that materials utilized in Veteran education are evidence-based - using current literature and research

Analyses data (i.e. - event capture - clinic utilization) to recommend allocation of clinical nutrition resources

Ensures evidence-based guidelines are integrated into clinical practice

Ensures Veteran education materials are written based on evidence-based guidelines - current literature - practice - and research

Collaborates with the food operations staff - bridging the work of the clinical nutrition staff to the food services provided to Veterans

May perform other related duties as assigned which are appropriate for this grade and assignment

The incumbent works under the general supervision of a Supervisory Dietitian - GS-13 or above - who establishes objectives and department priorities

The incumbent is expected to complete work assignments with relative independence and minimal guidance - personally setting the deadlines for work completions

They assume responsibility in work assignments in accordance with regulations and independently and resolves most conflicts by using considerable judgment and interpretation

Work is reviewed to ensure that overall objectives of the position are met
