Position Summary The position of Project Maintenance Technician is a hands‑on position that provides technical expertise and oversees and participates in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of facility equipment to reduce downtime while increasing operational efficiency in a validated cGMP environment. This equipment includes machinery, buildings, computer systems, control systems, safety, and security systems. Additionally, the role includes responsibility for maintaining shop tools, inventory, and keeping the department’s CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) updated while adhering to Lean and 5S principles. The position requires proficiency in the Technician Maintenance and Project Technician positions and may be required to provide training to technicians in these roles. It will also support after‑hours emergency response activities on an as‑needed basis. You will use your skill set to successfully complete projects that include troubleshooting and resolving technical issues and developing new solutions that improve performance and functionality.
Note:
This role requires onsite work at our Spartanburg, SC facility. Working hours for this night shift role are 6:45 pm – 6:45 am on a 2‑2‑3 rotating schedule. The training/onboarding schedule will be M‑F day shift.
What You’ll Do as a Project Maintenance Technician
Perform technical troubleshooting on a variety of modalities, technologies, and locations; perform scheduled preventative maintenance on high‑volume validated processing equipment; review maintenance tasks for effectiveness and frequency and recommend continuous improvement changes or Lean practices for implementation to management.
Diagnose potential or actual equipment issues through observation, problem identification, and analysis, utilizing available information (e.g., cycle printouts, blueprints, schematics); thereafter ensuring appropriate and efficient corrective action.
Complete operations and project work through construction and/or installation of systems including electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems while complying with all federal and state safety regulations and local safety policies and procedures, including Lock Out/Tag Out procedures and SDS safety procedures when using chemicals.
Ensure appropriate work instructions are developed and implemented to enable less experienced technicians to perform routine tasks.
Respond in person or by phone to emergency maintenance calls on a 24/7 basis as assigned.
Assist in the creation and maintenance of a spare parts program.
Strive for continuous improvement by analyzing new or alternative ways to improve operations, incorporating staff recommendations into analysis; respond to audit activities constructively and use findings to improve operations where possible.
Maintain mechanical and technical skills, knowledge, and abilities by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, and participating in training; train operations personnel to conduct minor, basic repairs to equipment, machinery, etc.
Contribute in a team effort by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, cGMP, Lean principles and other directives; support the directives and decisions of higher level management and perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed Required
High School Diploma/GED.
Minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
Ability to read, interpret, and practically apply electrical ladder diagrams and mechanical blueprints.
Working knowledge of PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) or other types of process control equipment.
Effective communication skills in English (reading, writing, verbal).
Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, and maintenance work order, inventory, and downtime software.
Effective interpersonal skills demonstrated through prior experience.
Above-average organizing, analyzing, and basic math skills (ratios, proportions, basic algebra) to determine organizational and regulatory problems and formulate corrective action plans.
Ability to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms, bells, horns, etc.
Preferred
Support Lean practices and principles.
Other
Ability to meet physical requirements of the position, including physical capacity evaluation testing and annual physical, as appropriate.
