As a Heavy Truck Driver, you will be responsible for safely transporting solid waste or recyclables and performing routine maintenance. This work is performed at our modern Solid Waste facilities, and you will be provided with everything you need including well‑maintained and regularly serviced trucks with access to on‑road support services.

This job posting is to create an eligibility register to fill future Heavy Truck Driver positions for the next three months.

Requirements

Class A CDL with medical card.

Two years of experience operating a tractor‑trailer or truck‑trailer combination.

Selection Process

Complete and submit an online application before the closing date.

Provide detailed and complete responses to the supplemental essay questions at the end of the application.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will advance to the next step of the screening process.

A panel of subject matter experts will review and score candidates’ responses to determine who will advance; top scoring candidates may be invited to interview.

Following interview sessions, professional reference checks will be conducted on the top scoring applicant. Provide three current professional references on your application.

A conditional job offer will be extended, contingent on satisfactory results of a drug and alcohol screening, a full driver’s license abstract from Washington State, a criminal background check, and an Over‑the‑Road Drive Test (4‑hour process).

About Solid Waste The Solid Waste Division oversees the disposal of garbage, hazardous materials, and recycling throughout Snohomish County. With three full‑service facilities and an additional four neighborhood and special items facilities, the Division is focused on reducing overall waste, promoting reuse of items and recycling, handling household hazardous waste, providing garbage and recycling facilities for County residents, and transferring garbage to a landfill while partnering with private vendors for recycled items.

Job Functions and Essential Duties

Operate a tractor‑trailer or truck‑trailer combination.

Drive to efficiently and safely transport solid waste or recyclables.

Inspect rig before driving to ensure all equipment is in good working condition.

Maneuver truck/trailer in tight quarters around customers and equipment.

Perform routine maintenance, checking fluid levels, lubricating equipment, and maintaining records.

Coordinate with Transfer Station Operators to schedule service and manage container inventory.

Communicate with supervisors and other division staff to identify and resolve operational problems.

Other Job Duties

May perform laborer duties when not operating assigned equipment.

May drive a tractor‑tanker combination to haul leachate or a truck with or without equipment trailer to haul heavy equipment.

Assist with recycling operations as required.

Special Requirements

Valid Class A CDL with medical card.

Valid First Aid/CPR card within six months of employment.

Full driving abstract from the Washington State Department of Licensing.

Pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening.

Registration in the FMCSA, Department of Transportation Clearinghouse.

Participation in the County Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.

40 hours of riding plus 40 hours of driving with a current driver trainer.

Successful completion of a driving test with a Solid Waste Operations Third Party Evaluator.

Attend the County's defensive driving course within six months of employment, or have an external certificate.

Tanker endorsement may be required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing the safe operation of truck-trailer combinations.

Knowledge of operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of truck-trailer and tractor-trailer combinations.

Ability to maintain effective work relationships with co‑workers and superiors.

Ability to remain composed and professional in stressful situations and communicate proactively with supervisors.

Ability to read, understand, and enforce safety rules and regulations.

Ability to learn First Aid/CPR methods and procedures.

Ability to maintain accurate paperwork and driving record within county standards.
