Job Description We are seeking a dedicated Food Service Worker II to provide compassionate, reliable food service support for patients and staff at Vernon State Hospital. This role includes a variety of food preparation, sanitation, and documentation tasks performed primarily in the central kitchen and satellite kitchen/serving areas.

Responsibilities

Arrive on schedule and maintain attendance; may be assigned to rotating schedules or overtime as required.

Assist in the preparation and portioning of food for regular and therapeutic diets, following food service procedures.

Prepare and maintain scheduled snacks and supplements, ensuring proper supply of snack items.

Distribute food safely and in a sanitary manner according to food service policies.

Serve food by following established procedures.

Follow proper food handling guidelines in accordance with federal, state, and HACCP regulations.

Receive food and supplies from vendors and maintain accurate inventory records.

Prepare necessary paperwork promptly and accurately.

Sanitize kitchen equipment, food prep areas, and satellite kitchen spaces.

Observe all safety and sanitation procedures.

Train or assist in training new kitchen employees to maintain a knowledgeable staff.

Perform other duties as assigned, including support for disaster response or COOP activation if required.

Qualifications

Minimum of 12 months experience in food service work.

Knowledge of food preparation methods and storage standards.

Knowledge of sanitation regulations; experience with HACCP guidelines.

Ability to operate and sanitize food service equipment.

Ability to prepare and serve food safely.

Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written instructions.

Basic math skills for cooking and preparation.

Strong interpersonal skills to work harmoniously with co-workers and patients.

English language proficiency for speaking and reading.

Willingness to obtain a food safety certification (ServSafe, Learn to Serve, or Food Protection Manager) within six months of hire.

Must be at least 18 years old; certain positions may require 21 years of age.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required.

Additional Information License or validity check: Applicants must provide background, drug screen, and registry checks, and may require a Texas driver license if driving is required. The position may require overtime and extended hours. This role is non-exempt and regular full‑time.
