Environmental Health Specialist

Compensation Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $52,338 - $54,955.

Responsibilities

Perform inspections, surveillance, consultation, and enforcement of state, local, and federal environmental health laws and regulations.

Evaluate, inspect, and permit on‑site wastewater (septic) systems, drinking water wells, and sanitation for food, lodging, child day care, tattoo parlors, public swimming pools, and institutional facilities.

Investigate environmental health complaints, potentially requiring enforcement action, and evaluate lead exposure in housing for children with elevated blood lead levels.

Carry out office duties such as telephone or written correspondence with the public, completing reports and permits, and attending local or state meetings and workshops.

Qualifications

Graduation from a four‑year college or university with 30 semester hours in the physical or biological sciences and two years of environmental health experience; or a four‑year or master’s degree in environmental health from an accredited program with one year of experience. Interns will be considered.

Must be registered as a Sanitarian by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners within three years of hire date.

Valid NC driver’s license with a good driving record.

Required Immunizations

Two‑step TST (skin test). If a negative TST exists within the last 12 months, a new TST must be completed prior to employment.

Proof of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunity: Documentation of two doses at least 28 days apart or laboratory evidence of immunity.

Hepatitis B series: Evidence of three doses, signed declination, or laboratory confirmation of immunity.

Evidence of Tdap vaccine.

Evidence of varicella immunity: Two doses at least 28 days apart, history of varicella or herpes zoster, or laboratory confirmation.

If working in the laboratory, documented proof of one dose of meningococcal vaccine.
