Research Specialist - Comparative Dermatology

Job Description In the Dermatology Service at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, the Research Specialist will assist in ambitious research on skin diseases in animals and the development of novel treatments. The role supports interdisciplinary projects that bridge dermatology, neuroscience, and immunology to advance both veterinary and human medicine.
Key Responsibilities
Independently design, perform, and analyze cellular and molecular biology experiments.
Maintain accurate research records; assist in data analysis, grant writing, and manuscript preparation.
Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot laboratory methods and protocols.
Conduct literature reviews to support experimental design and innovation.
Manage and maintain research sample inventories, including blood biobanks.
Oversee daily laboratory operations, including safety compliance, equipment maintenance, supply management, and expense tracking.
Train students, interns, residents, and faculty in laboratory techniques and equipment use.
Support clinical trials, including IACUC protocol preparation, data collection, and sample analysis.
Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals and priorities.
Other Responsibilities
Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs and evolving priorities.
Qualifications
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be earned from accredited institutions.
Preferred:
Hands‑on experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques: DNA/RNA isolation, PCR (including qPCR), gel electrophoresis, ELISA, and cell culture.
Proven ability to design experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot laboratory assays.
Strong organizational and documentation skills, with proficiency in maintaining accurate research records and databases.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying scientific information clearly.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic data analysis/graphing software.
