Hiring Rate: $21.470 per hour (eligible for promotion from $19.941 per hour with heavy equipment proficiency and CDL certification)

Job Duties

Operate trucks and light equipment to complete highway maintenance work.

Operate tractors with various attachments to maintain highways and right of way.

Operate post drivers for the installation of signs, fences, guardrails, and perform maintenance with hand-held power tools.

Maintain the upkeep of shrubs and lawns, and perform tree trimming and brush cutting.

Maintain yards, conduct building maintenance and cleaning, and paint buildings and structures.

Perform manual labor for concrete and bituminous patching and sealing of cracks.

Manually provide highway traffic control for construction and maintenance projects in accordance with safety procedures.

Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various equipment and hazardous materials from the roadway within weight restrictions.

Complete routine and general maintenance and mechanical repair on equipment.

Repair highway signs and perform snow removal.

Apply selective and non-selective herbicides to the highway right of way as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications – Highway Maintenance Worker:

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications – Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior:

Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and within 60 days of employment must possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience operating heavy equipment or a farming background. A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement. Commercial Pesticide applicator’s license. Basic computer experience.

Must be able to be placed on-call and respond during non-scheduled work hours including holidays and weekends for emergencies and special events.

Work must be performed in adverse weather conditions and during traffic management activities and snow removal.

Regular and reliable attendance is required; must be able to report for work within 40 minutes of normal driving conditions during emergencies.

Must be able to safely move, drag, and lift 35–60 pounds frequently, up to 90+ pounds infrequently.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must read, communicate effectively, give and receive instructions, and follow directions with minimal supervision.

Basic computer and arithmetic skills.

Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by adopting new technology and processes.

Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in the performance of duties.

Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors.

Ability to interact positively, treat co-workers and supervisors with dignity and respect, resolve conflicts, and make good decisions using sound judgment, processes, and purpose.
