Hydraulics Engineer (Engineer IV) – UDOT
Locations: one position in Region One – Ogden, UT; one position in Region Two – Salt Lake City, UT.
Job Description As a Hydraulics Engineer, you will provide technical support to internal and external customers in designing and analyzing roadway drainage systems. You will lead regional storm‑drain network design, hydrology, detention/retention basin design, bridge scour evaluation and mitigation, and culvert and open‑channel flow design. You will also support construction and maintenance personnel for roadway drainage issues.
Principal Duties
Lead roadway drainage design and analysis for the Region.
Prepare biddable plans, engineer's estimates, and special provisions for construction projects.
Teach and train others in best practices and the use of hydraulic engineering software.
Provide training, mentoring, and leadership to junior roadway and hydraulic designers.
Write specifications, calculate quantities and volumes, prepare cost estimates, and produce reports for public involvement.
Coordinate and supervise consultants or contract employees in performing contracted duties.
Conduct plan‑set reviews for drainage on encroachment permit applications.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah in compliance with Utah Code Annotated 58‑22.
At least 2 years of engineering experience following PE licensure.
At least 2 years of roadway drainage design experience.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with civil engineering principles, laws, rules, and regulations.
Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and hydraulic software such as SRH2D, HEC‑RAS, and FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox.
Creative, innovative, and exercising sound professional judgment in advanced engineering techniques.
Strong management and leadership skills when working with customers.
Salary & Levels Engineer III – $37.46 – $60.77 (for those meeting the minimum PE experience). Engineer II – $34.39 – $57.57 (for candidates without a PE license, with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, passed FE exam, and at least 2 years of graduate‑level engineering experience).
